The port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) accomplished a first, moving more containers in 2019 than any other time in its history, totalling 648,538 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 10% compared to one year ago. 

The Port Executive Director Gene Seroka recently announced that the Port of Los Angeles moved near-record cargo in 2019 with a total of 9,337,632 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), just short of the second-best year in its 113-year history, despite lingering tensions from the U.S.-China trade war.

According to a recent statement, the Port of Corpus Christi ended 2019 with record tonnages for December, with 13.8 million cargo tons. What is more, the entire year recorded 122.2 million cargo tons; a 16-million-ton improvement over 2018 tonnages.

It is said that a set of predictions in late 2019 informed that the rising sea levels could threaten triple the number of what was previously thought. Wärtsilä now highlights that port cities are due to "bear the brunt of these effects." Even if all the commitments are met as planned, it won’t stop sea levels from rising over the next two centuries. 

The Global Port Tracker report by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates suggests that after a year of fluctuations driven by the uncertainty of the trade war with China, volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to return to its usual seasonal patterns during the first few months of 2020.

The US EPA has awarded the Port of Baltimore $1.8 million in Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funds to replace older diesel-powered equipment with newer, cleaner versions. The grant will cover about 44 dray trucks, commonly used for transporting shipping containers to and from the Port.

According to a statement, the Port of Seattle became the first port in the United States to adopt principles with the aim to ensure that implementation of public-facing facial recognition technology is clearly justified, equitable, and transparent. Namely, commissioners created a working group, which aims to develop these principles into policies that can be clearly enforced and measured by March 31, 2020. In addition to this, no biometric technology shall be implemented at Port facilities until Commissioners formally consider working group recommendations and develop relevant policy by June 30, 2020.

The State of Florida welcomed the largest container ship ever docked on 11 December, at the Port of Miami. The "CMA CGM Magellan" is a 1,199-foot long, 167-foot wide container vessel and can transfer about 13,344 TEU.

Major US container ports saw an increase at volumes in November because retailers imported merchandise ahead of the new tariffs that will come into force in December, following US President Trump's announcement that a deal between China and US will be achieved after finalize a new round of tariffs on consumer goods on December 15.

Builders of a specialized fireboat for Port Canaveral have released details about the high-tech vessel, which will provide marine firefighting and rescue capabilities for the Port and surrounding communities. The vessel will offer enhanced fire protection and response time capabilities to serve expanding maritime and commercial space industry operations at the Port.
