In spite of a clear decline in certain fish populations, many fisheries subsidies still promote illegal fishing, overfishing and overcapacity, according to UNCTAD, adding that their removal is a priority. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 33% of the world’s fish resources are overfished, while around 60% are fished at maximum biologically sustainable levels.
Four United Nations human rights officials have strongly criticised the British Government’s scheme governing protection and labour rights for migrant fishermen from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The letter focuses on modern forms of racism, slavery and on trafficking in persons.
On January 15, Norway’s Supreme Court began hearings on whether European vessels can fish for snow crab off Arctic islands, north of Norway without getting permission from Oslo. The hearings will result into who has the right for oil explorations in the region, according to Reuters. Into question is whether the snow crab is a sedentary species that is living on the seabed or a fish stock that wanders.
During the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species the participators did not agree for the protection of the blue shark, which is the most heavily fished shark globally. Blue Shark is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as near threatened globally.
‘IMO’s Cape Town Agreement on fishing vessel safety needs to be ratified and implemented in order to save fishers’ lives,’ was IMO’s key message during the UN COFI 2018 in Rome,on 9-13 July. The Agreement currently has 10 Contracting States, but needs 22 for entry into force.
