IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim attended the inauguration of the new maritime and ocean policy research institute at the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden, on May 8. WMU aims to find ways to use ocean spaces for the sustainable development of present and future generations.

Papua New Guinea supported a two year pilot project in the country, to attract more women in the transport sector. This is an attempt by the country to comply with the UN Sustainable Goals. Especially, these policies are responding to the United Nation’s sustainable development goal 5. This goal wants to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

On Friday 4 of May, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Headquarters of the IMO. Mr. Guterres highlighted the important contribution of IMO’s work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He also welcomed the recent adoption by IMO of an Initial Strategy to reduce GHG emissions from ships.

Spanish ferry operator Baleària has put into service the 'Eco Lux' to the Eivissa-Formentera route, the second eco-fast ferry in the series of four that are destined to cover this line. Compared with the ships of the Maverick series, operating this line until recently, the 'Eco Aqua' reduces CO2 emissions by around 35%. 

Women in maritime are contributing greatly to the maritime transport sector. This was the message of Helen Buni from IMO's gender program as she opened the second regional conference for Pacific Women in Maritime held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from 26 - 28 of April. The conference emphasized the significant progress made by the women in maritime association (WIMA) in the Pacific

The UN development system must be effectively reformed in order to be able to limit the impact of the serious threats that impede the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said UN Sec-Gen António Guterres, on the sidelines of the annual operational segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Nine Baltic marine areas were described as ecologically or biologically significant, on the sidelines of the Regional Workshop to Facilitate the Description of EBSAs in Baltic, in late February, in Helsinki. These include five transboundary areas, covering waters of two or more countries, and extend into 14 of the 17 Baltic Sea sub-basins.

IMO is at risk of unresolved conflicts of interest due to shortcomings in its governance, according to a new study by Transparency International. The anti-corruption organisation noted that private shipping-industry concerns could have undue influence over the policymaking process at the IMO, which could impede actions against GHG emissions.

Ports all over the world are aiming for a future built around sustainable economic models. Thus, nearly 1000 ports and port-related companies committed themselves to achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, during an event in Antwerp, under the auspices of the World Ports Sustainability Program, on 22 March. The commitments made by the international port community are recorded in the historic Charter of the WPSP.
