Majority of global tanker fleet have yet to adopt ECDIS

The 58% of tanker fleet do not yet use ENC service The majority of ships in the global tanker fleet have yet to adopt ECDIS, according to data published for the first time by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO).The SOLAS regulations on the mandatory carriage of ECDIS will come into force from 1 July 2015 for all tankers over 3,000 gross tonnes, apart from permitted exemptions. Over 8,500 tankers will be required to comply with these rules and, with less than 10 months to go, the UKHO can reveal that 58% of these ships do not yet use an ENC service. The amendments to the SOLAS Convention requiring the mandatory carriage of ECDIS were adopted in 2009. To date, approximately 3,600 tankers, or 42% of the global tanker fleet use an ENC service. This leaves almost 5,000 tankers that do not use an ENC service and therefore may not have ECDIS installed. The UKHO data also reveals a significant divergence in the ENC use of the global tanker fleet between different tanker sizes and types. Overall, 23% of the global product tanker fleet of approximately 1,700 vessels is already using an ENC service, compared to 44% of crude tankers and 63% ...

Kvaerner in Statoil Unmanned Platform Project

Statoil has awarded Kvaerner a concept study related to a standardised, unmanned dry tree wellhead platform for the Oseberg Future Development project. The concept is focused on minimisation of facilities, equipment and costs down to water depths of 150 meters and may be a cost effective solution compared to a conventional subsea tie-back solution. Kvaerner have already for some time worked on developing a cost efficient, standardised wellhead platform concept called "Subsea on a stick?."  The new wellhead platforms could both increase recovery and utilise the new generations of jack-up drilling rigs, as well as reducing development costs. "We are excited about this new concept and pleased that Statoil has chosen Kvaerner as one of the concept study contractors for future solutions for cost efficient operations. The study confirms that we are being recognised for our solid expertise when it comes to platform solutions, "says Sverre Myklebust, executive vice president for Kvaerner's Jackets business area. This project is expected to be the first in a series of new projects from Statoil where unmanned wellhead platforms could replace a traditional subsea project solution within the applicable water depths. "We fully support the need for cost reductions within our industry and believe ...

LR updates ShipRight software

An enhanced Fatigue Design Assessment (FDA) Level 2 solution is now available in LR's ShipRight software. It provides a robust tool which can help owners to reduce their risks. This first release covers oil tankers and membrane type LNG carriers. Lloyd's Register has given designers, ship owners and operators an updated tool to help assess new or existing designs and to help further reduce the risk of fatigue damage in ship's hull structures. Cracks and fractures at connections between longitudinal stiffeners and transverse frames of ship's structures, particularly in large oil tankers with higher tensile steel constructions, were a serious concern in the 1980's and the early 1990's. To address these concerns in the early 1990's, Lloyd's Register introduced ShipRight FDA procedures to promote structural detail design and fatigue performance assessment. Over the last 20 years, Lloyd's Register has continuously invested in the development of ShipRight FDA procedures. A new FDA Level 2 module has been incorporated within the ShipRight software which further improves on current technology and makes the assessment tool more robust and versatile. The ShipRight FDA Level 2 module includes the following features: ShipRight FDA Level 2 module included features: New interface for the modelling and fatigue ...

New AVANTI port information software

Live testing of ‘Avanti', a new on-line web based application that provides validated nautical information for port users is due to commence at a number of European ports. Following successful prototype testing at Port of Rotterdam, the ports of Göthenburg, Marseille and Luela will commence live testing in spring 2014. Avanti has been developed by Envitia for the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in collaboration with the International Harbour Masters' Association (IHMA) and promises to make a major contribution to the rapidly expanding field of e-Navigation. The need for easily accessible and reliable nautical port information has never been more important as all players in the industry aim to increase efficiency, reduce costs and achieve environmental benefits. By securely accessing their port's information on the Avanti website, harbour masters can speedily update port information making it instantly accessible to the marine industry and port community through a website that has been developed by an internationally respected organization. UKHO's Publications Senior Product Manager, Christine Trickett, said "Avanti is an important research and development project for the UKHO and we are pleased to have reached the stage where we can fully test the concept with industry players". IHMA's President, Captain Eric Atkinson, ...

Havyard to construct hybrid battery powered Arctic PSV

Havyard, the Norwegian ship technology company, signed a contract to build a hybrid battery powered platform supply vessel (PSV) for the privately-owned Icelandic oil services company, Fafnir Offshore. The vessel is going to be designed by Havyard Design and Solutions in Fosnavaag and will be constructed at Havyard Ship Technology`s yard in Leirvik in Sogn, Norway. The vessel will become newbuild number 126, has a contract value of just above NOK 350 million and is due to be delivered in July 2015. The innovation onboard this vessel is that it is equipped with a hybrid battery powered diesel-electric propulsion system. "When we develop a new ship design we have two main focal points", says Arve Helsem Leine, Design Manager of Havyard Design & Solutions. "Those are the customer`s demands in relation to the ship`s operational needs and area of operation and also to use the latest accessible technology and research tools in order to make the ship as efficient as possible. We have invested a lot in our design philosophy and in our calculation tools and methods for testing. We also work closely with key suppliers in developing good solutions for our designs and hybrid battery power is a good ...

UKHO launches Admiralty Digital Radio Signals Vol 2

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) announced the launch of Admiralty Digital Radio Signals volume 2, which has been added to the UKHO's expanded portfolio of Admiralty Digital Publications (ADP). Admiralty Digital Radio Signals volume 2 (ADRS2) is the latest of the UKHO's world-leading nautical reference guides to be made available in a digital format as part of the UKHO's ADP portfolio, which is now available as a three-month free trial for new customers. ADRS 2 provides bridge crews with a comprehensive range of compliant, digital positional and timekeeping references to help ensure that their ships are at the right place at the right time. The key features of ADRS 2 include listings of VHF radio-direction-finding stations, a worldwide listing of radar beacons (Racons and Ramarks), a worldwide listing of known operational AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) Aids to Navigation and a worldwide listing of radio beacons transmitting DGPS corrections. In common with the other digital guides within ADP, the digital format of ADRS 2 offers significant advantages to bridge crews, making it far easier to search and consult compared to the paper equivalent. ADRS 2 is quick and simple to use, enabling bridge crews to make faster, better-informed decisions. Updates ...
