A new report is calling on the UK Government to grant special economic status to airports and seaports, in order to stimulate international investment, reshore manufacturing and ultimately lower prices for consumers in a post-Brexit Britain.

The British Port of Ayr welcomed the opening of its new Bute Terminal, expected to support Scotland’s agricultural sector and enhance the wider economic prosperity of the region through its 4,000sqm of storage space, the Associated British Ports (ABP) announced. 

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) seized a record amount of heroin from a containership at the Felixstowe Port following an international investigation. The UK NCA discovered about 1.3 tonnes of the class A drug. 

UNCTAD issued a study concerning the alleged no-deal Brexit, highlighting that the UK as a member of the EU, participates in approximately 40 agreements along with market access to about 70 countries, which may stop having access to after the no-deal Brexit. The UNCTAD research notes that if these agreements are not concluded by exit day, it would cost the U.K. economy almost $2 billion in exports.

According to Stena Bulk, Iran will release seven of the 23 crew members of the Stena Impero that are held. However, the company has not yet received official confirmation of the release date. The rest of the crew will remain on board in order to safely operate the vessel.

Oil & Gas UK published its ‘2019 Economic Report Roadmap to 2035: A Blueprint for net-zero’ which highlights the industry’s positivity to move towards a net-zero future. The report presents the increasing demand for energy in an expanding global economy.

A new wave of UK field development projects are to be sanctioned towards 2022, poising the UK offshore scene for a timely comeback, according to energy research firm Rystad Energy. It forecasts that FIDs could be reached on as many as 38 new UK offshore projects over the next three years.

The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) published a statement on the loss of migrants trying to pass through the English Channel in small boats to reach British waters. In August alone, a record of 270 attempted to cross the Channel. 

After the announcement that the UK Government has opened a new grants scheme for infrastructure modifications at ports in preparation for a ‘no deal’ Brexit, the British Ports Association has welcomed the funding but suggested that at this late stage a deal was the best way to prevent possible disruptions at the border.

The Scottish Government has awarded a funding of £3.4 million to Scottish engineering company Orbital, to help build the world’s most powerful floating tidal turbine. The company was awarded the money as the first recipient of the Scottish Government’s £10 million Saltire Tidal Energy Challenge Fund.
