The UK Maritime CoastGuard Agency (UK MCA) began monitoring the country’s commercial fishing industry and compliance with ILO 188, assisted by technological means to monitor the situation. UK MCA highlights that commercial fishing is the most dangerous profession, with totally seven lives lost in 2019.
The Maritime and Coastguard agency examines all of fishermen’s training and certification regulations, as it aims to update the UK’s training and examination system for fishermen in order to boost their skills and also improve safety in seas.
In light of the recently-published investigation into the fatal capsizing of the fishing vessel ‘Laura Jane’ off Plymouth in May 2018, the UK MAIB issued a safety flyer with valuable safety lessons learned for the fishing industry, stressing risks associated with vessel overloading and poor stability assessment.
The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency will increase its fees for the first time in over ten years, in order to be flexible to invest further in the services it provides to the maritime sector. Namely, from 13 November 2018, the UK MCA will increase most of its fees across the UK.
The owner of a small fishing vessel has been fined a total of £15,628 after being prosecuted by the HM Coastguard for operating an unsafe vessel and failing to comply with the small fishing vessel code of practice. The vessel had been subject to a pre-arranged inspection by the UK MCA at Boston and had a catalogue of deficiencies related to emergency procedures and lifesaving equipment.
