The UK P&I Club issued its updated “Carefully to Carry” publication, highlighting the importance of safe carriage, loading and storage of cargo.

UK P&I Club recently published a guide concerning the controls and the key points that the UK Club’s Risk Assessors look for when inspecting a vessel. Specifically, the guide allows ship operators to carry out a similar check on the Threats and Controls, ensuring that the ship has a good risk profile.

In the beginning of the year, 1 January 2020, the latest version of the IMDG Code, Amendment 39-18, came into force. The UK Club advises on the implications of proposed carriage of cargo on deck. Namely, carriage of cargo on deck exposes the cargo to various risks from the elements, like sea-spray and wind, as well as the potential risk of being washed off or falling overboard because of bad weather conditions or inadequate lashing/stabilising. Based on the cargo, there may also be issues with the stability of the vessel itself.
The UK P&I Club published a statement focusing on the importance of passage planning, in light of the ‘CMA CGM Libra’, transferring cargo with a value in excess of US$500 million as well as about 8,000 tons of bunkers, grounded on a shoal whilst sailing out Xiamen port, China through a recognised dredged channel marked by lit buoys.

The dangers associated with enclosed spaces are well known – so why the unremitting level of casualties?
The UK P&I Club and the TT Club inform about a consignment of aluminium pellets (or dross) that was found at the port of loading with the doors and sides of the container blown out. The terminal arranged to test the samples, as there was no evidence that the unit had been dropped during handling.
