UASC names the world’s most eco-efficient ULCV

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) named the industry’s most eco-efficient container vessel at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), Mokpo South Korea. M.V. ‘Barzan’ is a part of the industry’s first LNG-ready ultra-large container vessel fleet. With a loading capacity of 18,800TEU, the DNV GL classed vessel M.V. ‘Barzan’ is first in a new class of leading ultra-large container vessels that will be the largest in UASC’s fleet to date and will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency, due to optimized vessel design and an array of propulsion and equipment efficiency technologies. Preliminary calculations indicate an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) value that is close to 50% below the 2025 limit set by IMO. UASC is working to establish a range of additional metrics and targets through which the efficiency of UASC’s vessels can be managed to drive further reduction in carbon emissions across all UASC vessels. The M.V. ‘Barzan’ has a CO2 output per TEU that is more than 60% below a 13,500 TEU vessels delivered just three years ago. “We understand that providing environmentally friendly transport solutions and recognizing environmental initiatives around the globe are no longer a choice; they are a necessity for both our ...

MPA Singapore designates “Green Ship of the Year”

Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), a shipbuilding affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), announced that UASC Umm Qasr, a 9,000 TEU containership built by HSHI, has recently been designated “Green Ship of the Year” by the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore. The containership, which measures 300 m in length, 24.8 m in height and 48.2 m in width, was delivered to Singapore-based Asiatic Lloyd on July 31, 2014 and is currently chartered to Dubai-based United Arab Shipping Company (UASC). The main features of the containership are an electronically-controlled main engine, a ballast water treatment system and AMP (Alternative Maritime Power) system. The main engine maximizes fuel efficiency and reduces noise, vibrations, and carbon emissions by automatically controlling fuel consumption depending on sailing speed and sea conditions. The ballast water treatment system installed on UASC Umm Qasr can purify seawater in its ballast tank by filtering and sterilizing bacteria and plankton. Moreover, the AMP system on the vessel enables it to utilize the shoreside electric power, thereby reducing harmful emissions while at berth. With proven capacity to build eco-friendly ships, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has been successfully meeting increased demand from shipping companies around the world for fuel-efficient, eco-friendly ...

Rising concerns over piracy

Somali pirates reaped US$ 85 million from ransoms last year Somali pirates reaped an estimated US$ 85 million (Dh312m) from ransoms last year, and ships are increasingly using high-speed transits and armed guards to prevent seizures.Shipping officials say pirates also increased their brutality towards hostages in the past six months in an effort to pressure ship owners to settle faster and for higher amounts. The rising concerns brought together government and industry professionals at a high-profile anti-piracy conference in Dubai this week."Ship owners clearly see maritime piracy as the number one challenge and concern," said Peter Swift, the chairman of the steering group of the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme."We would all like to see it eradicated. We also know it is not going to go away overnight," said Mr Swift, who is also a former head of Intertanko, an association for the oil tanker industry .The scourge of piracy, facilitated by the absence of a functioning central government in Somalia since 1991, has cost the global economy $ 7 billion, said Mohammed Adbulahi Omar Asharq, the foreign minister of the transitional federal government of Somalia. The average ransom is $ 4m, and ransoms of as much as $ 9.5m have ...
