The second day of the SAFETY4SEA Virtual Forum successfully concluded on October 21st focusing on the how the pandemic has affected ship safety, maritime and cyber security as well as marine insurance claims

SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Dynagas Ltd has received the 2020 GREEN4SEA Technology Award, sponsored by Bureau Veritas, at a prestigious award ceremony which successfully concluded on March 3rd at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the 2020 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum.

The transport and logistic insurer TT Club along with the global provider BSI issued the "Cargo Theft Report 2020" highlighting the impact of cargo theft on the global supply chain, while giving its recommendations of how theft risks can be reduced.

According to a recent statement, the corporate innovation and venture development firm, Rainmaking, matched five maritime giants with eight startups as part of its Trade & Transport Impact Program.  Namely, Cargotec, HHLA, Inmarsat, Shell, and Wärtsilä will all work together with startup teams from eight different countries, on 13 separate projects with the aim of “accelerating innovation that delivers genuine business results.”

With the arrival of a new decade, the shipping industry continues experiencing digital transformation, with shipping companies having to switch from the traditional way of operations into a modern and smart environment; Yet, as it goes with every change, digitalization was firstly met with skepticism but now the industry acknowledges that new technological developments are key to improving efficiency in every front.

While there is a general acknowledgement of the importance of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among organizations, there is room for more concrete action to take place in support of the SDGs if these are to be achieved by 2030, says a recent study by PwC.

An intrepid NASA robot with the aim to search for signs of alien life in the solar system has excelled in its first road-test in Antarctica. In fact, it is said that a team of researchers and engineers spent three weeks at Australia’s Casey research station, testing the robot under the Antarctic sea-ice.

The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) issued its oil spill statistics, noting a continuing decrease at the frequency of oil spills from tankers. With one large and two medium oil spills in 2019, the number in 2019 was the lowest in 50 years, ITOPF notes. 

Bureau Veritas estimates that in 2020 there will be major growth in compliance, leading testing and inspection. The certification authority revealed that the key trends in the year ahead will be tackling climate change, ‘Big Data’ as well as ethical supply chains.
