During the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference, Robert Kenworthy, CEO of GTMaritme, discussed the statistics and trends of data that they see across the vessels using their services. Namely, he offered a unique insight into the data and emails that are being transferred and highlighted the various areas that this data can become vulnerable to Cyberattack. Concluding, he offered advice on how these can be mitigated as best practice.
The emerging risk associated with cyber threat requires not only better training for seafarers, but also spreading awareness of best cyber security practices, argued Peter Broadhurst, Senior VP of Safety and Security, Inmarsat Maritime, adding that there is still ‘a long way to go’ when it comes to effective cyber protection.
Compared to other global industries, shipping is relatively insulated from the general public at large—surprisingly so given its global reach and indispensability. It is not a world where people understand that without shipping, “half the world would starve, while the other half would freeze.”
Given that maritime industry operates in a dynamic and changing environment, it is vital to keep pace with latest developments; thus training should not be limited only to technical and operational skills, Dr. Angelos Menelaou, Frederick University says. In general, the young generation needs knowledge and skills which could assist in their personal development as well, he further notes
Mr. Patrick Ho Maxwell, Vice President of Magsaysay People Resources Corporation notes that the current landscape poses many challenges for the training of seafarers; thus high level education and development of both their technical and soft skills are vital. Mr. Maxwell notes that above all, operators need to invest in people, concluding that in order to attract the younger generation, we have to ‘transform from teaching to learning strategies’.
Dr Marina Papaioannou, DNV GL’s Maritime Academy Hellas, emphasized on investing in training noting also that new generation has need of ‘blended learning’. The aim should be to involve Generation Z and keep it interested but also make them realize the importance and use of face-to-face training for their social skills, exchange of knowledge and ideas.
Mr. Nikolaos Stefanis, Key Support Manager at Kongsberg Maritime, Hellas notes that training needs to follow developments and align with latest rules, needs and technologies. It is important to focus on the new needs with new technology solutions in order to provide efficient training experience, he concludes.
In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA, Capt. Rajesh Unni Founder & CEO of Synergy Marine Group, discussed key issues surrounding life onboard as well as the existing and future challenges for seafarers. In this regard, he referred on how rising automation is expected to create new demands on skills in IT, communications, and engineering.
Captain Hans Hederström, Managing Director at Center for Simulator Maritime Training, CSMART, and Karan Bhawsinka, Port Study Manager, CSMART outline how CSMART attempts to develop pilotage plans on a bridge simulator together with bridge teams and local port pilots.
During his presentation at the last SAFETY4SEA Conference in Athens, Capt. Yves Vandenborn, Director of Loss Prevention, The Standard Club, noted that seafarer resilience can be improved through enhanced training regimes focused on realism, putting emphasis on additional experience.
