 TOTE Maritime has decided to delay retrofitting its ro-ro/container ship Midnight Sun to run on LNG for one year due to the sinking of the El Faro in early October.Midnight Sun had been scheduled to visit the Keppel Offshore & Marine shipyard in Singapore this December to be retrofitted with four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines, an LNGPac fuel feed system and two 1,100m3 LNG bunker tanks. Tote had planned to substitute El Faro on Midnight Sun's regular US West Coast route linking Tacoma, Washington with the Alaskan port of Anchorage.The News Tribune reports that John Parrott, Tote Maritime president, said that without a ship to replace the Midnight Sun, Tote is delaying the conversion a year. El Faro, then called the Northern Lights, served the Alaska route until 2006 when it was transferred to Florida to serve Tote Maritime Alaska’s sister company Tote Maritime Puerto Rico. Mr Parrott said Tote is negotiating with the Coast Guard to win its approval for the delay. The 1975-built El Faro and its crew of 33 disappeared on 1 October while sailing from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico.  NASSCO delivered the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containership, the Isla Bella, to TOTE Maritime. The ship was delivered nearly two months ahead of schedule. NASSCO is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.As part of a two-ship contract signed in December 2012 with TOTE, the 764-foot long Marlin Class containerships will be the largest dry cargo ships powered by LNG, making them the cleanest cargo-carrying ships anywhere in the world.  The Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced a $900,000 cooperative agreement with Totem Ocean Trailer Express Inc. (TOTE) to further develop knowledge regarding the costs and benefits of vessel conversions to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion. TOTE will convert the containership MV Midnight Sun to operate on LNG and will work with MARAD to obtain pre and post-conversion air emissions data, and operational information to assist maritime stakeholders in assessing the potential of LNG conversions.This demonstration project on the use of LNG for containership propulsion is a part of an ongoing program to promote increased use of alternative fuels and technology in the maritime industry.  The MV Midnight Sun is a Roll-on/Roll-off (RO/RO) cargo ship, which provides round-trip shipping service between the Port of Tacoma, WA and the Port of Anchorage, AK.The study is expected to be completed by 2018.Source: US MARAD / Image Credit: TOTEIn the origin, I was open with you propecia before and after has changed my existence.  On Saturday, August 29, General Dynamics NASSCO launched the second ship in a series of the world’s first natural gas powered containerships.  The christening and launch ceremony took place at the company’s shipyard in San Diego. The ship, the Perla del Caribe, was built for TOTE, a leading transportation and logistics company.The new Marlin Class ships, constructed by NASSCO shipbuilders and measuring the same length as two-and-a-half football fields, will carry cargo exports between U.S.-owned ports. The ships will reduce particulate matter by 98 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 72 percent, the equivalent of removing more than 15,700 cars from the road, making them the cleanest cargo-carrying containerships in the world.As part of the ceremony, the ship’s sponsor, Ms. Emma Engle, a third-generation shareholder of Saltchuk, TOTE’s parent company, christened the ship with a traditional champagne bottle break over the ship’s hull. The vessels will operate on LNG, which will significantly decrease emissions while increasing fuel efficiency as compared to conventionally-powered ships. The LNG-powered ships will also include a ballast water treatment system, making them the greenest ships of their size anywhere in the world. The world’s first LNG-powered containerships are getting national attention as the focus of the newest advertisement in the Think About It campaign sponsored by America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA). The ad, which launched today, highlights TOTE Maritime’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG) containerships. WesPac Midstream LLC (WesPac) and Pivotal LNG, Inc. (Pivotal LNG), a wholly owned subsidiary of AGL Resources Inc., announced they have signed a long-term agreement with TOTE to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel TOTE’s two new state-of-the-art containerships.  Pivotal LNG and WesPac are addressing the growing demand for LNG in the southeast by constructing a new natural gas liquefaction facility in Jacksonville, Fla. The land has been purchased, the engineering and permitting process is advancing, and the new Jacksonville LNG facility is expected to be operational in mid-2016.  The Jacksonville site provides the capability to add additional natural gas liquefaction and LNG storage capacity in the future in order to supply other customers in Jacksonville and regional markets. TOTE Shipholdings Finalizes Charter with Sea Star Line for First LNG Containerships

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced a $324.6 million loan guarantee for TOTE Shipholdings and Saltchuk Resources for their Marlin Class vessels. The two new Marlin Class vessels, which will be the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships, will serve the Puerto Rico trade and will be complete in 2015 and 2016. This financing is made available under the Title XI Loan Guarantee Program. TOTE and Saltchuk qualified for this loan as the new ship build is an advancement in shipbuilding technology and being constructed at a U.S. shipyard. The new containerships are being built at General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, California. The Marlin Class vessels set new standards for environmental responsibility, reducing a number of air emissions including particulate matter, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.
