A security drill is to take place in the Port of Rotterdam and surrounding area in the coming two weeks, in an effort to boost effective response to national threats.

In an effort to boost sustainability within inland shipping, SolarDuck and Voyex joined their forces to develop a solar island on the Waal near IJzendoorn, a first in the Netherlands. Under their collaboration, partners have set up an R&D partnership, which goals to enable emission-free sailing on hydrogen.

Porthos, the initiative for carbon capture and storage in Rotterdam, is expected to store an annual amount of 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 from the industry in empty gas fields beneath the North Sea as from 2024.

The European Commission has proposed awarding 102 million euros in funding to the Porthos project. The Porthos project regards the capture and storage of CO2 in the North Sea floor.

The port of Rotterdam informs that coasters taking part in the mobile shore power trial on Parkkade in Rotterdam were being supplied with free electricity, with the aim to encourage shipping companies take part in the trial.

The Port of Rotterdam now offers the tracking of dry cargo flows. NPRC, the inland shipping cooperative, digitized its ‘supply chain’ in an efficient way in order to enable clients to monitor the status of their cargo with precision. Since summer, clients have been in the position to track connections to sea-going transport in Rotterdam as well as have real-time insight into inland shipping transport.

A trans-Atlantic underwater tunnel able to support a hyperloop system is being tested by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (Marin), with researchers hoping for a consortium to develop the project and highlight that this mean of transport can act as a less polluting alternative to air travel.
