The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) called on the Thai government to implement and enforce the 'Work in Fishing' Convention, and ratify ILO Conventions 87 and 98, to decrease the risks of forced labour or labour rights abuses in seafood industry supply chains in Thailand.

More than 130 people were transferred to hospital, after an explosion and fire onboard the South Korean container ship 'KMTC Hong Kong' while berthed in Thailand’s eastern Laem Chabang port on Saturday. Video footage depicts the magnitude of the fire.

Asian governments are trying to improve the facilities and ease the regulations to attract more super yachts to cruise in the region and spend time in their marinas. In fact, in Thailand this has led to an increase in visiting super yachts, reaching an all time high in Phuket.  Namely, during February, the Yacht Haven Marina accommodated 36 super yachts.

APM Terminals signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sahathai Terminal PLC and Mitr Phol Sugar to develop a 345,000 TEU capacity greenfield container terminal in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok River Terminal Limited will accommodate Thailand’s increasing containerized import and export trade. Completion of the transaction is subject to receiving applicable regulatory approvals and licenses. 

Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the largest container terminal operator in the area, has opened Terminal D at Laem Chabang Port. The opening ceremony for the USD 600 million facility took place on January 30. Terminal D is the first terminal in Thailand to handle some of the largest ocean-going vessels. When completed, the terminal is to have a total quay length of 1.700 metres, with 17 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes and 43 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes all using remote control technology.

Thailand is the first country in Asia to accept the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007 (No. 188), that protects the living and working conditions of fishers onboard vessels. The Convention has specific requirements related to work on board fishing vessels, including occupational safety and health, medical care at sea and ashore, rest periods, written work agreements, and social security protection.

The Commission acknowledged that Thailand has successfully addressed the lacks in its fisheries legal and administrative systems. For this reason it lifts the so-called "yellow card", in place since April 2015, a warning from the EU that the country at that time was not sufficiently tackling illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

KrisEnergy Ltd. shut down its Thai oil production at the Wassana field in the G10/48 licence in the Gulf of Thailand and halted drilling of infill development wells by the Mist jack-up rig due to tropical storm 'Pabuk'. After temporarily shutting down the production, all staff from the Wassana mobile offshore production unit and Mist jack-up rig was safely evacuated to onshore Thailand.

Thailand is set become the first country in Asia to ratify the Work in Fishing Convention C188, which sets basic standards of decent work in the fishing industry. On 29 November, Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly approved proposal to proceed with the ratification of ILO Work in Fishing Convention No. 188, 2007 (C188).

Thailand's first all-electric ferry recently started operation. The 40-passenger ship is part of a fleet of ferries operated by Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA). It will operate on a five-kilometer route daily between Hua Lampjong and Thewes Pier.
