Alfa Laval announced that authorities have granted approval for testing with ammonia at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre. By the end of 2022, the centre will be able to work with all fuels in consideration as the marine industry decarbonizes.

During MEPC 74 back in 2019, IMO approved a draft amendment to the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) to conduct commissioning testing so as to demonstrate through representative sampling and indicative analysis that a BWMS is working properly. According to this amendment, approved in MEPC 75, sampling and analysis should be conducted at commissioning testing for BWMS installed on board ships on or after 1 June 2022.

An autonomous ship model has been successfully tested in Aker Arctic's ice model test laboratory in Helsinki. The video shows how the ship model was able to detect obstacles in the ice tank utilizing onboard sensors, maneuver around them without operator input, and moor itself automatically to a target pier. 

A ship navigation support tool jointly developed by NYK, MTI Co. Ltd., and Japan Radio Co. Ltd. aims to allow users to easily plan routes using the handwriting function of the electronic navigational chart, in addition to managing and sharing operational data using integrated information, such as meteorological and hydrographical forecasts.

The US Coast Guard approved Cal Maritime's Golden Bear Facility to work with DNV-GL as a sub-contracted laboratory for land based and shipboard testing of BWMS. The GBF, a facility onboard the Training Ship 'Golden Bear', is a practical environment for testing BWMSs to IMO and USCG standards.

China has initiated construction of Asia's first testing facility for autonomous vessels in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, Saturday. The Wanshan Marine Test Field is a a 225 square nautical mile zone, where operators can test autonomous steering and obstacle avoidance. The test field will be the also the largest in the world.

The new area is open to both Norwegian and international organisations, in order to support the growth in development of new solutions for autonomous maritime operations. The test-bed is the third of its kind in the country and only the fourth such approved area in the world.

Parker Kittiwake offers a new analyzer, which allows the simultaneous testing of base number (BN), total acid number (TAN), insolubles, soot loading, viscosity, FAME and water content of oil samples on board a ship. The tool processes the raw data in a simple way helping the crew to maximise the operational efficiencies of their vessels whilst also preventing unplanned downtime and reducing costs, the company said.
