Largest simulation test ever realized

The European Maritime Simulator Network will be used to validate the STM concepts and services, running the largest civil simulation test ever, with 29 manned bridges in 10 centres. The purpose is to reflect the STM concept, to validate and evaluate the findings and to give input to various hypotheses and the Formal Safety Assessment developed by other activities within the project.

Atmospheric Testing – Know your equipment

The London P&I Club has published new safety poster to highlight how important is to know the equipment for atmospheric testing when entering Enclosed Spaces. On 1 January 2015 amendments to SOLAS regulation III/19 Emergency training and drills entered into force, requiring that each enclosed space entry and rescue drill, which is to be conducted at two-monthly intervals, shall include checking and use of instruments for measuring the atmosphere in enclosed spaces.

Requirement for atmosphere testing instrument for enclosed spaces

IMO Resolution MSC. 380(94)DNV GL has issued a technical update on IMO Resolution MSC.380(94) regarding the requirements for atmosphere testing instrument for enclosed spaces.At MSC 94, an amendment to SOLAS XI-1 was made, introducing a new chapter 7. This chapter requires an atmosphere testing instrument for enclosed spaces. The amendment enters into force on 2016-07-01, and requires the following:Every ship to which chapter I applies shall carry an appropriate portable atmosphere testing instrument or instrumentsAs a minimum, these shall be capable of measuring concentrations of oxygen, flammable gases or vapors, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide prior to entry into enclosed spacesSuitable means shall be provided for the calibration of all such instruments. This implies that calibration shall be done in accordance with makers instructions and recorded.Instruments carried under other requirements may satisfy this regulation. Enclosed Space Entry atmosphere testing instruments

-On 1 January 2015 amendments to SOLAS regulation III/19 Emergency training and drills entered into force, requiring that each enclosed space entry and rescue drill, which is to be conducted at two-monthly intervals, shall include checking and use of instruments for measuring the atmosphere in enclosed spaces.So far no carriage requirements for atmosphere testing instruments for enclosed spaces are in place, but this will change in the near future. SOLAS Member States have been requested to already voluntarily implement SOLAS regulation XI-1/7, with a final entry-into-force date of this SOLAS-amendment set at 1 July 2016: Every ship is to carry at least one appropriate portable atmosphere testing instrument which as a minimum is capable of measuring concentrations of oxygen, flammable gases or vapours, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide prior to entry into enclosed spaces.The instrument that is used to test the atmosphere in an enclosed space, before entry and at appropriate intervals thereafter until all work is completed, is not a personal gas detector that is intended to be carried by an individual whilst inside the enclosed space.
