Lloyd's Register announced that it classed the first personal, composite submarine, the DeepFlight Super Falcon 3S, in accordance with its Rules for the Construction and Classification of Submersibles and Diving Systems. 

Storfjord in Sunnmøre region is officially established as a test area for autonomous ships, following the signing of an agreement between the Norwegian Maritime Authority, the Coastal Administration and GCE Blue Maritime.

Wärtsilä, in collaboration with Gulfmark Offshore, has realized testing of remote control of ship operations, on August 21, off the North Sea coast of Scotland. The testing involved driving the vessel through a sequence of manoeuvres using a combination of Dynamic Positioning and manual joystick control.

Aiming to expand its research on autonomous shipping, Japanese Nippon Yusen Kaisha has set plans to test a remote-controlled container ship across the Pacific Ocean in 2019. The plan comes after the fatal collision of US warship John McCain with a merchant tanker on 21 August, off Singapore.

Russian developers have launched the project of a unique technological platform that will allow testing of unmanned surface vessels navigation in virtual environment. The project will be presented by the working group MariNet of the National Technological Initiative.

The Association of Bulk Terminal Operators has called for a complete overhaul of the cargo sampling and liquefaction testing protocols for raw ores and less common cargoes, such as nickel ore, fine wet coal and bauxite, pointing out that the current methods for danger identification are inadequate, specially in ports where conditions are inclement.
