ESPO released a statement to urge reassessment of ports' importance in the TEN-T network in view of European Parliament’s Transport Committee vote today on the revision of the regulation.

Finland’s newest icebreaker Polaris, co-financed by the European Union’s TEN-T programme, is about to enter service. Operational readiness for icebreaking pursuant to a contract between Arctia and the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) begins on Tuesday 1 November 2016. Icebreakers will be manned as required by ice conditions and the FTA as charterer.

Ghent Port Company has announced that it is starting construction of a 220-metre long quay wall in the port of Ghent. Thanks to the new quay, the arrival of scrap metal and the departure of slag from the blast furnaces of ArcelorMittal Ghent will also be able to take place on water. This investment in new port infrastructure contributes to more sustainable transport by seagoing ships and inland vessels.

Gate terminal and its shareholders Gasunie and Vopak have announced that the LNG terminal at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam has been expanded to include a third berth and special infrastructure for the loading of small LNG vessels.

The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) joined the campaign of 29 European transport organisations, representing infrastructure managers, operators, and users in the maritime, inland waterways, railways and air sector, which urges the European Parliament and the Council to increase the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) budget in the upcoming review of the Multi-Annual Financial Framework.

  The EU's TEN-T Programme will co-finance with nearly €500,000 a regional project supporting the use of alternative fuels, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG), in the Seine river and the French Channel area. The project is expected to reduce environmental impact and cut down on fuel consumption in water transport. The project aims to introduce greener fuels in French regional water transport and pave the way to their wide deployment in line with the new EU requirements on the reduction of maritime transport emissions. This study will focus on the regulation, safety and installation aspects of the necessary infrastructure to support the deployment of alternative fuels. It will also transfer knowledge to about 75 stakeholders in eight ports through a specific training programme preparing the participants on the use of low emission fuels. The project was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under the TEN-T Annual Call 2013, priority 'Decarbonisation / substitution or environmental cost reduction'. Its implementation will be monitored by INEA, the European Commission's Innovation and Networks Executive Agency. The project is to be completed by December 2015.
