The President of Tanzania, John President Magufuli, suspended the plan of the Bagamoyo port construction, following a disagreement with the Chinese investors. The project would have resulted to the biggest port in East Africa. 

Tanzania has become the 93rd member state of the International Labour Organization (ILO) to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC 2006). The MLC establishes minimum international working and living conditions for seafarers on board vessels. The MLC will enter into force for Tanzania in April 2020, one year after its ratification. 

The owner and captain of the Malaysian-flagged fishing vessel ‘Buah Naga 1’, that was boarded and arrested by Tanzanian law enforcement agents as part of Operation Jodari, have pleaded guilty to the charge of Unlawful Possession of Shark Fins in a plea agreement with Tanzanian prosecutors, Sea Shepherd informed. 

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has expressed his great sadness over the recent casualty of the Nyerere, the domestic ferry which capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, killing 224. I would like to send our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the crew members and passengers who perished in the accident, Mr. Lim said.

Death toll from the Tanzanian ferry 'MV Nyerere' has reached 224, after the vessel capsized in Lake Victoria, Tanzanian authorities informed, while the ship's managers have been detained for questioning. The ferry sank on Thursday evening just a few metres from the dock on Ukerewe, the lake’s biggest island.

At least 136 people were killed after the ferry 'MV Nyerere', estimated to be significantly overcrowded, capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, on Thursday afternoon. The exact number of the people onboard cannot be estimated because the ticketing officer was among those who perished in the disaster.

Illegal fishing off Tanzania has been significantly reduced after six months of at-sea patrols by a coalition of Tanzanian law enforcement agencies, Fish-i Africa and Sea Shepherd crew. This is the first campaign of this unique partnership between civilian organizations and government, called Operation Jodari.

Tanzania's President John Magufuli, stated last week that he will suspend the registration of foreign ships in Tanzania, after incidents in which ships carrying the flag of Tanzania were caught with drugs. Furthermore, Mr. Magufuli ordered all of the ships under the Tanzanian flag to be investigated.
