The Hong Kong Legislative Council has recently approved the Air Pollution Control (Fuel for Vessels) Regulation, extending the 0.5% sulphur limit standard from ships berthed at port to ships generally operating in Hong Kong waters. From 1st January 2019, all vessels are required to use compliant fuel with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.5% or use scrubbers when within Hong Kong waters.

A collision incident between two tankers and a container ship took place in Kaohsiung port on Saturday, October 3 morning. The 6,500 dwt chemical tanker Der Yun was moving to another and collided with the small tanker Kin Shing. After this collision, Kin Shing accidentally hit the container ship Setsu Maru.

New research from Wood Mackenzie shows that Asia-Pacific's offshore wind capacity will increase 20 times to 43 GW in 2027. China is still in number one, which is expected to see offshore wind capacity rise from 2 GW last year to 31 GW in the next decade. Taiwan will account for 20% or 8.7 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2027.

Starbucks, the international coffee brand, opened its first store in Asia Pacific built from recycled shipping containers. Located in Taiwan, the 320-square-metres store was structured by 29 recycled shipping containers to complete the company's commitment to building sustainable stores. 

The cargo ship 'Ying Hai' developed heavy starboard list in Penghu waters, off Taiwan, in October 2. The ship which was loaded with containers has sank on October 3 in Penghu. Following the sinking, a navigational warning was issued about floating containers which put navigation in the area at risk. 

EJF urged the Taiwanese government to review its fisheries law after it documented gross human rights violations aboard a Taiwanese vessel, which became the first in the world to be detained over the summer for violating new international standards of decent work in fishing. 

All 12 crewmembers of the stranded container ship 'Jin Hua' were safely rescued, Taiwan's Maritime and Port Bureau informed. The authorities are now examining a plan to salvage the vessel when the weather conditions allow it. The ship's condition has now gotten worse and there are concerns that oil may leak.

Seven ships grounded off Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan due to heavy winds and waves, which were caused by a storm that hit Taiwan. All 88 crew of the seven ships that were stranded are reported safe, Taiwan’s Maritime and Port Bureau informed. Local authorities are waiting for weather conditions to improve to start response operations.

Two tankers 'Winner 19' and the 'Shine Luck' ran aground on June 14 due to inclement weather. According to Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council, a total of 32 crew members of both vessels were rescued, while there are still about 200 metric tones of oil on the two oil tankers. However, no spills have been reported.

Dutch-based Van Oord announced it has been selected as a contractor for a large 640 MW offshore wind project in Taiwan, marking first steps to the Asian offshore wind market. The Yunlin project, which has a contract value of approximately EUR 500 million, will be constructed eight km off the coast of the Yunlin prefecture.
