Tallink Grupp conducts its first cold ironing at Stockholm port

Tallink Grupp announced that it began using its shore power in order to provide electricity to two of its vessels, Silja Serenade and Silja Symhony, while they’re alongside in port, to decrease the environmental impact of the vessels and also mitigate air pollution in the Nordic capital cities the company’s vessels visit.

A new carbon neutral product, the first of its kind in the industry, is to be used by selected Maersk customers for their supply chain. The pilot project has been successfully tested in a trial, under the collaboration of the Dutch Sustainability Growth Coalition (DSGC), and Shell this year.

Clean Arctic Alliance calls for ban of HFO use in Iceland’s waters

In light of Iceland’s Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources decision, which bans the use of fuel oil with more than 0.1% sulphur content for ships operating in its territorial waters, Dr Sian Prior, Lead Advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, highlighted that the Alliance although supports this decision, they are in favour of generally banning HFO use and carriage as fuel.

In light of the World Environment Day, CMA CGM published its 2018 CSR Report, according to which the Group has achieved a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per container transported per kilometer between 2005 and 2015. It has achieved a further 17% reduction between 2015 and 2018, in line with its 2025 objective of -30%.

Successful implementation of 2020 sulphur cap the main focus of ICS

ICS said that its immediate focus, and of the shipowners it represents, is the successful implementation of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) global sulphur cap.

The transition to a hydrogen future has begun

Mr Noé van Hulst, a former Chair of the IEA Governing Board, addressed the future development of hydrogen in the maritime industry. He notes that the general idea is that hydrogen will play a crucial role in the world’s transition to a sustainable energy future. Thus, it is of a great importance, to help reduce carbon emissions from the shipping sector and in the meantime, provide a long-term energy storage at scale.

Port of Antwerp eyes hydrogen bunkering

The Port of Antwerp plans to launch a hydrogen bunkering station during 2019, its CEO Jacques Vandermeiren informed during a recent forum. This development comes as the Port aspires to become multi-fuel, bringing several alternative fuels for the shipping industry, such as LNG and methanol. The Port of Antwerp is now working on the logistics of the project, while a timeline cannot be confirmed yet.
