As the world is changing, technologies that were the absolute norm, are now becoming old-fashioned. Up until now, ships have been sailing using fuels. However, it seems that electric vessels are gaining momentum, with many countries considering them as the future.

In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA during SMM 2018, Mr. Eirik Nyhus, Director, Environment, International Regulatory Affairs, DNV GL notes that electrification is going to be a key element to move forward the sustainability space. Definitely decarbonization is the number one challenge for the industry, Mr. Nyhus comments, citing three key elements to accelerate pace. He concludes that climate change is the key driver for more action, meaning that policy makers ‘have to actually start today’ and not wait till 2023!

Following a last year announcement that it would fund a research to assess the impact of shipping in the marine environment, the Government of Canada now awarded a contract to ESSA Technologies to look at tools to assess the cumulative impacts of shipping on coastal marine ecosystems.

Members of the European Parliament proposed new incentives to collect marine litter at sea, new EU-wide standards and definitions for biodegradability and compostability, and a complete EU ban on oxo-degradable plastic by 2020. This non-binding draft resolution was adopted on September 13 with 597 votes to 15 and 25 abstentions.

Green Award-certified ships registered in the RMI Registry will now enjoy a 30% discount on their annual marine services fee. The Green Award is a voluntary certification scheme for ships that go beyond the industry’s regulations in terms of safety, quality, and environmental performance.
