Lately, shipping faces more and more pressure to reduce its emissions. Responding to this pressure, the sector is trying to come up with new ideas and solutions to improve the green footprint of ships. From new fuels, to slow steaming it seems that ships have many options, but how about ports? Well, ports can also play a significant role in reducing shipping’s emissions, by using one method: cold ironing.
The COVID-19 outbreak has brought several disruptions to global business, most of which are yet to be seen and most of which are expected to hit women disproportionately hard, for several reasons that we explore below. So what is the business’ role in supporting women amid an unprecedented crisis for the global economy?
The key green challenges for shipping, emissions reduction measures as we are heading towards 2030 and ways to enhance sustainability were discussed during the last GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, where Mr. Apostolos Belokas, Managing Editor, SAFETY4SEA, asked industry experts to think of what needs to change to improve current landscape in the maritime industry. With IMO 2020 just around the corner, the shipping industry must already have a plan to comply. However, despite the fact that we are just two months away from this groundbreaking regulation for maritime, there is increased uncertainty regarding compliant fuel oil availability worldwide. In such case, companies should have a plan to deal with such unavailability, with the answer might lying in the Fuel Oil Non-Availability Report (FONAR).

With the shipping industry entering a new, environmentally-friendly period, stakeholders in the maritime industry are seeking for ways to reduce their ships’ emissions. Apart from choosing green fuels and scrubbers, ports come to add another solution: Cold Ironing. This is the process of providing shoreside electrical power to a ship at berth, while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off.
