Xeneta issued a survey on the competence between big shipping alliances and smaller lines, stating that, in the current economic conditions, there aren't many shipping lines that can operate entirely on their own, as they cannot provide the required coverage all by themselves, so they enter shipping alliances. However, there must be ways that smaller lines can also offer value.

Smart Shipping Survey Findings

Apostolos Belokas, Founder & Managing Editor, SAFETY4SEA, presented the results of “the Smart Shipping Survey’’ during 2017 SMART4SEA Conference & Awards. He argued that there is need for the shipping to build cyber awareness momentum to move forward. Regarding autonomous shipping, the survey showed that the majority of the participants believe that it will become a reality for the industry beyond 2030. Mr. Belokas commented that two years ago many would argue that industry is far away from this vision and highlighted that autonomous shipping is now coming fast and it is a one-way street.

New survey measures maritime safety

A group within the STM project was formed to develop a real-time Maritime Safety Index. Based on maritime expert judgement, ship traffic is assessed with regards to safe navigation. In order to capture their assessment of what is considered to be “safe”, multiple various traffic situations in both open and constrained waters are graphically presented in an on-line survey.
