In an exclusive interview with SAFETY4SEA during SMM 2018, Mr. Eirik Nyhus, Director, Environment, International Regulatory Affairs, DNV GL notes that electrification is going to be a key element to move forward the sustainability space. Definitely decarbonization is the number one challenge for the industry, Mr. Nyhus comments, citing three key elements to accelerate pace. He concludes that climate change is the key driver for more action, meaning that policy makers ‘have to actually start today’ and not wait till 2023!

During SMM in Hamburg, business and science experts discussed how the global shipping industry can achieve the IMO’s ambitious environmental goals. DNV GL announced release of the first approval of manufacturer scheme for additive manufacturing producers, as it forecasts a rapid development of additive manufacturing or 3D printing in shipping, a technology that 'holds a great deal of promise for the maritime industry', said Mr. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen.

At the opening press conference of the SMM maritime trade fair in Hamburg, political and business leaders discussed key challenges that shipping has to face, with a special focus on the 2020 sulphur cap and the industry's goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by the year 2050.
