The timing is right for the industry to explore their current back end policies and procedures associated with safety and security which are largely manual and error prone.

SHI’s Smart Ship Solution aims to improve vessel efficiency by using real time data from hull and equipment sensors, in cooperation with land-based technical and fleet managers. Real time data will be exchanged between ship and shore facilities, to enable automated operations, and is among the most important cybersecurity challenges for the marine and offshore industries.

Bourbon Corporation with its new plan wants to digitalize its existing fleet, in order to improve their operations. Namely, the "Smart shipping" program will connect the fleet of 132 supply vessels of Bourbon Marine & Logistics. Overall, Bourbon Marine & Logistics’ has 65 vessels, of which 41 non-smart vessels, which cannot be connected, will be sold at current market price.

Experts shared their views on the impact of autonomous shipping on human element, cyber risk security and the latest technological developments that prove steps towards further digitalization in shgipping.

In a bid to align with smart shipping and innovation, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co is working to develop China's first smart crude oil carrier, that will be designed to incorporate technology to assist the captain in operation.

New technologies are already making a great impact on shipping. It is therefore crucial for the industry to adapt to the new requirements. Dan Rooney, Commercial Maritime Product Director, Speedcast, gave an exclusive interview at SAFETY4SEA at Europort, Rotterdam in early November, highlighting how smart shipping has affected the current landscape.

The vessel 'Great Intelligence', a 38,800 dwt modified version of the Green Dolphin fuel-efficient Bulk Carrier concept, is the pilot smart ship project within China, designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and built at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. 

The Challenge is based on Wärtsilä’s new purpose: “Enabling sustainable societies with smart technology”. It starts with the focus on the company's recently launched Smart Marine Vision, inviting start-ups to collaborate around the whole value chain of smart shipping.

Rolls-Royce and the European Space Agency signed an agreement to pursue space activities for autonomous, remote controlled shipping, aiming to promote innovation in European digital logistics. The collaboration aims to develop new solutions for communication between vessel systems and shore based systems in addition to ship-to-ship communication.
