The Asia Wind Energy Association partnered with De Oude Bibliotheek Academy (DOB-Academy) to launch a regional Academy for the fast-developing offshore wind industry in Asia-Pacific. The Asia-Pacific Offshore Wind Academy will be created in Singapore and will provide educational services for the regional offshore wind industry. 

As Reuters recently reported, PetroChina’s Singapore bunkering unit considered to be the top marine fuel supplier in the world's biggest ship refuelling hub, during 2019. Although, official data showed that the total amount of suppliers marked a decrease for a sixth year-in-a-row.

As the 2020 sulphur cap entered into force, the shipping industry saw the introduction of Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oils (VLSFOs), which has been increasing since October 2019. However, VPS notes that a rise has been observed in fuel instability leading to sediment formation from these fuels.

Singapore has recently implemented the 1996 Protocol to the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims 1976 (LLMC 1976). Therefore, effective from 29 December 2019, operators can expect increased limits of liability for maritime claims.

It is said that a set of predictions in late 2019 informed that the rising sea levels could threaten triple the number of what was previously thought. Wärtsilä now highlights that port cities are due to "bear the brunt of these effects." Even if all the commitments are met as planned, it won’t stop sea levels from rising over the next two centuries. 

According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) 29 out of 45 Singapore's licensed bunker suppliers, have readily available 0.50% sulphur fuel oil, with all expect two having IMO 2020-compliant marine gasoil (MGO). Although, there are still several reports that some shipowners are struggling to find very low sulphur fuel (VLSFO).

Sinanju Tankers Holdings announced that it has taken delivery of Marine Vicky, Singapore's 1st LNG-powered bunker tanker. The vessel will now join the fleet and begin operations in Singapore within the first quarter of 2020.

In its weekly report for 7-13 January, ReCAAP ISC informed of two CAT 4 incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia. One incident occurred to a ship while anchored at Alang Anchorage, India; and one incident occurred to a ship while underway in the Singapore Strait.
