IMO provided an overview of the latest progress made at the 5th session of its Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment that took place on 12-16 March 2018. Key issues included ventilation of enclosed lifeboats, shore power supply, life saving equipment in polar waters, fire prevention on ro-ro ships, as well as use of lifting appliances onboard.

Nidec Industrial Solutions has signed a contract worth 8 million euros with Port System Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea to design and construct the “shore-to-ship” project in Genoa, to reduce air emissions, while minimizing the noise pollution that upsets tourists and inhabitants of the neighbouring areas.

On the sidelines of the World Ports Sustainability Program-event, the Antwerp Port Authority signed two agreements on 23 March, to create the necessary conditions to supply onshore power for seagoing ships in the port. Using onshore power will immediately reduce emissions of NOx, CO2 and particulates, the port expects.

Plugging a ship into shore-side power and turning off onboard generators is one solution to reduce air pollution from ships, as well as limit local noise. For this reason, IMO will examine safety aspects of on shore power supply to ships, also known as “cold ironing”, “alternative maritime power” and “shore-side electricity”.

Mr. Jan Kjetil Paulsen, Senior Advisor Shipping at the Bellona Foundation talks about the recent developments of vessel electrification, which is considered an important step towards a zero-emission future. Except from cutting emissions from fossil energy sources, electrification is also a profitable business solution, which may stimulate the adaptation of operators, Mr. Paulsen argues, predicting however challenges regarding initial investments in new technology and infrastructure.

Delegates from marine and energy industry, representatives from port authorities and governmental bodies, as well as elemed project partners, met in the Praetorian Palace in Koper, on 29 January, to discuss the opportunities for on-shore electric power supply technologies in port of Koper.

The study selected cruise ships, as the cruise industry has been proactive at addressing environmental issues over the past decade and these vessels are more frequently fitted with the on-board infrastructure required. This, along with high individual electricity demand while at berth is expected to increase utilisation.

Siemens informed that it has received an order from the regional grid operator 'EWE Netz GmbH' to provide the key components of a Siharbor shore power supply system in Cuxhaven, including the complete transformer station as well as the cable feed system for ro-ro ships.

Port of Amsterdam announced that in cooperation with AEB Amsterdam, Senfal  and Energy eXchange Enablers, they will supply ship-to-shore power to river cruise and inland navigation vessels.

Port of Amsterdam revealed plans to reduce shipping emissions and minimise environmental impact by working with the shipping sector. In its Clean Shipping Vision for 2030, the Port describes how it intends to achieve its sustainability objectives through concrete actions, such as reducing emissions of docked sea cruise ships by 50%.
