French cruise company Ponant and Saint-Nazaire-based maritime shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique have teamed up to test a revolutionary sailing system on the company’s vessel 'Le Ponant', expected to significantly reduce energy consumption tied to propulsion and thus minimize the operation's environmental footprint. 

Zhejiang Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Sinopacific Shipbuilding that has bankrupted, proposed a restructuring plan. Namely, Shangai Yingjun Investment Management company will provide $220 million for the yard's restructuring. After the restructuring has been completed, Yingjun Investment will have full control of the yard.

The five Indian yards that are already being considered for EU inclusion would add 323,000 LDT of annual capacity, while four others recently applying could contribute a further 300,000 LDT. The EU must step up its assessment of these yards and ensure that acceptable conditions, MSI notes.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a draft revision of its shipyards' white list, aiming to receive advice from the public. The first white list for the shipyards included 51 shipyards, while the new one includes 50. The new white lists aims to improve the troubled domestic shipyards.

One worker died and four others are injured as a result of an accident at the Subic shipyard in the Philippines, on May 12. Namely, the four workers fell from a scaffolding and the department of labour and employment in central Luzon ordered a subcontractor of Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp to stop operations.

Starting from the beginning of 2019, China will stop permitting foreign-flagged vessels to be dismantled at its shipyards, according to an official announcement by the government last week. Chinese-flagged ships will still be allowed to be recycled internally at its local shipyards.

Death rate in Southeast Asian shipbreaking yards for 2018 has so far seen an upsurge, with 10 fatalities and 2 serious injuries in Chittagong alone, according to figures published by NGO Shipbreaking Platform for the first quarter of the year. There was a total of 206 ships broken in Q1 2018, 152 of which were sold to the beaches of South Asia for dirty and dangerous breaking.

The European Economic and Social Committee called the European Commission to adopt a strong mutual policy, in order to make sure that the European maritime technology industry will survive competition from Asian shipyards. The EESC urged the Commission to focus on the LeaderSHIP 2020 strategy'and to forward key recommendations for the sector's new LeaderSHIP 2030 strategy.

Following Seatrade's conviction of illegally selling vessels for demolition in South Asian yards, in breach of the EU Waste Shipment Regulation, the Swedish P&I Club recommended shipowners to take greater notice of the regulations when considering demolition. This was the first time an EU shipowner has been held criminally liable for such case.

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower fined AZ Marine Offshore Services of Singapore and its operations manager $152,000 and $61,000 respectively, after an engineer lost his life in 2016 at a shipyard. The ministry said that the company did not manage to provide appropriate safety instructions regarding vessel-to-vessel access within the shipyard.
