After the wreck cruise ship crew hanker for the sea

Officer rescued a drowning fellow crew member Hours after the Costa Concordia's captain had abandoned ship, and after helping dozens of passengers to safety, Carlos Garrone stripped off his clothes and plunged into the freezing waters off Giglio island and rescued a drowning fellow crew member. As the operation to salvage the massive cruise liner moves forward, its pace governed by the vagaries of the winter weather, passengers are lining up to claim to compensation. But like several of his shipmates, and despite the trauma of the midnight wreck, Garrone has no plans to leave his job."Maybe some people won't want to sail again after living through such a traumatic experience," said Garrone, an engineer who lives in Valencia, Spain."I risked my life to jump into the water and save a drowning man. To know I saved a man makes me feel good about myself. For me it was a positive experience," he said.As divers search for the missing, and salvage crews prepare to recover fuel from the carcass of the Costa Concordia, other crew members interviewed by Reuters also said they had no intention of giving up a life at sea.It is of course their job, but many of the ...

More oil spills from Christmas Island ship wreck

MV Tycoon broke its moorings and smashed up against a sea wall three weeks ago Heavy seas off Christmas Island have broken the wreck of a cargo ship into three pieces and there are growing concerns about the environment, as more oil leaks from the ship. The MV Tycoon broke its moorings and smashed up against a sea wall three weeks ago.Residents of the island say the oil spill is getting worse.John Richardson, Commander of Christmas Island Volunteer Marine Rescue, says about one third of the beach at Flying Fish Cove has been polluted by the wreck."It's unfortunately discharged quite a considerable amount more diesel and oil, so we have a very large slick and a very large area of Flying Fish Cove, towards the port, absolutely black," he says.Administrator of Christmas Island, Brian Lacey, says while salvage operations can't begin until weather conditions improve, he hasn't been made aware of any plans to remove the vessel.Source: ABC News

History’s Worst Shipwrecks

From the RMS Titanic to the Costa Concordia accident Luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Italy, killing at least five people and leaving more than a dozen missing. Tragic though it is, most of the passengers were saved, and it is hardly one of the worst sea disasters. From the RMS Titanic to the MV Doña Paz, see some of the deadliest shipwrecks in maritime history.Costa ConcordiaWith more than 4,000 people aboard, the Costa Concordia ran aground off the coast of Italy on Jan. 13, 2012, then began taking on water and capsized. The ship had departed Civitavecchia, near Rome, just a few hours before.A lifeboat drill had not yet been held for the newly arrived passengers. Five people have been confirmed dead and others are missing, but the majority of the 4,234 people on board at the time of the accident have been accounted for. While the ship had enough lifeboats for everyone, the severe list made launching them difficult and some passengers had to be evacuated by helicopter. One passenger described the chaotic scene, saying, "We were having supper when the lights suddenly went out, we heard a boom and a groaning noise, and ...

Stern of wrecked cargo ship sinking off New Zealand

Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster The stern of the Rena slipped under the water after heavy seas split the vessel in two over the weekendThe stern of a stricken cargo ship which ploughed into a reef off New Zealand's coast three months ago is sinking into the ocean, officials say. They say most of the stern of the Greek-owned Rena - which broke in two at the weekend - has slipped off the reef and is now submerged. The bow section remains upright and wedged on the reef. The Rena has leaked large amounts of fuel in what was New Zealand's worst maritime environmental disaster."The foremost part of the stern was still sticking up out of the water, with the rest - including the bridge - submerged," Maritime New Zealand said in a statement on Tuesday. The agency's spokesman James Sygrove described the situation as "fluid", adding that the authorities remained unsure of what would happen next, the Associated Press news agency reports.Official fear that the sinking of the stern could further complicate salvage efforts. Some 150 cargo containers with milk powder and timber have spilled into the ocean since the 236-metre (775ft) vessel snapped in two, after being pounded by waves of up to ...
