US lawmakers introduced a bill called "Energizing American Shipbuilding Act of 2018." This bill aims to rebuild America’s domestic shipbuilding and maritime industry. The legislation will support American shipbuilding by requiring a portion of LNG and crude oil exports to be transported on US-built, U.S.-crewed vessels.

The new vessels will be the first examples of a new series of hybrid Ro-Ro vessels, which will use fossil fuel during navigation and electricity while in port, ensuring "zero emissions in port". The vessels will be equipped with mega lithium batteries which will allow them to meet the energy requirements while at berth.

South Korean DSME announced the signing of a MoU with NBP and Intel Korea, to jointly develop Smart Ship 4.0 Service Infrastructure. DSME will build a basic environment for the infrastructure of the Intelligent Smart Ship 4.0 Service on the Naver Cloud Platform of NBP and introduce Intel’s IoT solutions to the On-Ship IoT System.

After years of struggling with dwindling orders, the S. Korean shipbuilding industry is starting to show signs of recovery with a steady rise in orders. Busan needs to effectively use marine finance infrastructure and ensure its stronger presence as a marine finance hub city by focusing on changes.

Huntington Ingalls Industries's Newport News Shipbuilding division will cooperate with 3D Systems to create additive manufacturing technologies expected to facilitate the adoption of metal 3-D printing in the naval shipbuilding industry. The collaboration will support future qualification and certification programs to implement this  manufacturing technology for the US Navy.

Despite an overall improvement in the global shipbuilding industry, the bandages in international competition are getting tougher, with China attracting more and more orders in niche markets with prices below material costs, noted Germany's Shipbuilding Association, VSM.

The US-based shipbuilder announced it will lay off some of its employees, as part of its efforts to "adjust its operations and workforce in line with its current order backlog". The company has already laid off approximately 10% of its workforce during the first quarter of 2018. The shipbuilder is currently building two container ships for Matson (Hulls 029-030). During Q1 2018, Hull 029 was successfully launched from the building dock and the first block of Hull 030 was placed in the building dock. The planned delivery dates for Hulls 029 and 030 are Q3 2018 and Q1 2019, respectively. In addition, during Q1 2018, the project to build up to four additional environment-friendly vessels for the Hawai’i containership trade was placed on hold and the Letter of Intent between Philly Shipyard and TOTE for the construction and sale of these vessels expired in January. TOTE’s ships, which were planned for deliveries for 2020 and 2021, would have secured additional workload for the shipyard. While Philly Shipyard continues to actively seek the new orders and capital necessary to build vessels after Hull 030, it has begun to adjust its operations and workforce in line with its current order backlog. After the IMO announced its decision to reduce shipping emissions by at least 50%, the Korean shipbuilders welcomed this decision, as they are already starting to take action to adapt to the new era. They said that the stricter rules will set up a new norm in shipbuilding that will create demand for more ships.

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., informed that it has won a US$407 million order, to build four container ships for the European firm Zodiac Group Monaco by July 2020. The order comes as HHI, which is the world's largest shipbuilder by sales, is shedding its efforts to combat dwindling orders.

Global LNG capital expenditure (Capex) will total $236 billion over 2018-2022, which represents a 14% growth compared to the preceding five-year period, according to Westwood Global Energy. In the near-term, expenditure is expected to be subdued due to the lack of project sanctioning seen during the oil price downturn.
