The President of Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, is open to a government takeover of the recently-bankrupted Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Philippines (HHIC-Phil), according to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, driven mostly by concerns to save thousands of Filipino jobs.

South Korean shipbuilders, after becoming the world's leaders on new orders in 2018 on increased demand for LNG ships, are expecting a solid demand for vessels during 2019. Specifically, local shipyards have won orders to build 60 LNG ships last year, in a time when demand for LNG carriers is steadily increasing. 

Admiralty Shipyards have officially began the construction of the high-Arctic research platform North Pole. The shipyard had signed a contract with Federal Service of Russia on Hydrometeorology and Monitoring of the Environment for constructing the ice resistant self-propelled platform back in April 2018.

The 2018 has been a better-than-expected year for South Korean shipbuilders, with an increase in new orders and especially in LNG ships. The combined new orders won by the shipyards in 2018 are almost up 20% compared with last year.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has exceeded its orderbook goal for this year before the year ended. Also, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) surpassed its expectations.

During previous sessions, the Goal-based ship construction standards for bulkers and oil tankers (GBS) were adopted, as well the initial verification of 12 Recognized Organizations. Now, MSC 100 confirmed that the information submitted regarding the maintenance of verification by those ROs aer complying with the Standards.

The EU and South Korea discussed the South Korean shipping and shipbuilding state subsidies measures in the context of the EU - South Korea Free Trade Agreement implementation. SEA Europe and ECSA expressed their satisfaction of these discussions, as European shipbuilding and maritime equipment industry need to benefit from fair trade as well as open markets.

The European Union wants to take part in a complaint that Japan filed against the South Korean shipbuilding industry, according to the World Trading Organization (WTO). Namely, Japan has requested WTO dispute consultations with South Korea concerning alleged subsidies provided by the Korean government to its shipbuilding industry.

South Korea announced Thursday another package of financial measures to boost small and mid-sized shipbuilders, who are encountering dwindling new orders over the last years. The measures call for both governmental and private companies to place orders for a total of 140 LNG-fueled vessels by 2025, including two next year.

Japan has requested WTO dispute consultations with South Korea concerning alleged subsidies provided by the Korean government to its shipbuilding industry. Japan claims that the challenged measures, which include funds, loans, guarantees, insurance and other financing, are inconsistent with WTO's SCM Agreement and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.
