New version of port clearance software by DNV GL

Port clearance can be a complex and time-consuming process, with costly consequences for shipowners if it is not completed meticulously and accurately. The release of DNV GL's Navigator Port 2 software brings a new level of usability, with a completely new and intuitive structure and interface. The new Navigator Port 2 is a consequence of last year's merger of DNV and GL. "Coming together as DNV GL, we have become one of the biggest and most innovative maritime software providers in the world," says Torsten Büssow, Director Maritime Software, DNV GL. Worldwide, 300 customers and 4,000 vessels use DNV GL's different maritime software tools. Navigator Port 2, previously called DNV Navigator, has taken a leap forward in ease-of-use. The interface has been improved. It is now more intuitive and efficient, with a work-oriented process that is easier to understand and navigate within. This increased usability will not only save time in the actual port clearance process, but will also save resources in terms of training new users and implementation. "With today's increasingly complex regulations, shipowners are realising that they cannot continue with their old non-systems for port clearance. In order to operate efficiently, they are relying on our innovative software ...

Assessing and predicting the risk of hull fouling

AkzoNobel's Marine Coatings business, the producer of hull coatings has developed Intertrac, a software system that enables ship owners and operators to accurately assess and predict the risk of hull fouling dependent on the route their vessels are transiting. Born in 2011 and trialled with customer partners since February 2013, Intertrac overlays a vessel's route, speed and location data with a comprehensive fouling challenge data set enabling coating specifications to be tailored specifically to suit an individual vessel's operations and trading routes. This ensures effective cost management for hull coatings, as well as maximizing a vessel's operational efficiencies. Intertrac divides the world's oceans and coastal waters into 64 "large marine ecosystems", each with its own fouling risk and characteristics including salinity, temperature, thermal range, seasonality and typical pH levels. Analysis of these variables has enabled the company's research and development scientists to assign each region with a level of fouling risk split into five categories. Intertrac uses data that is provided by a vessel's Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) - information that is available in the public domain - to establish operating profiles. Identified either by name or IMO number, a vessel's historical record of activity over a certain period can ...

ClassNK Releases Design Support Tools for EEDI Verification

ClassNK has released the new PrimeShip-GREEN/MinPower software. PrimeShip-GREEN/MinPower was developed to help shipyards comply with the EEDI requirements of the Amendment to MARPOL Annex VI by calculating minimum propulsion power requirements in compliance with the IMO 2013 INTERIM GUIDELINES FOR DETERMINING MINIMUM PROPULSION POWER TO MAINTAIN THE MANOEUVRABILITY OF SHIPS IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS. To evaluate minimum propulsion power requirement, added resistance in irregular waves should be calculated based on ship's Lines. Calculating added resistance in waves can be difficult especially at initial design stage. That is why ClassNK developed a simplified formula to calculate added resistance in waves using only basic information such as main ship specifications, allowing designers to easily evaluate the minimum propulsion power requirement for their ships. In addition, ClassNK has released an updated version of the PrimeShip-GREEN/PSTA software, which was initially released in June 2013 to provide shipyards with an easy means of calculating progressive speed trial analysis in compliance with the ISO 15016:2002 standard recognized in IMO guideline 2012 GUIDELINES ON SURVEY AND CERTIFICATION OF THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY DESIGN INDEX (EEDI). Recently, a new draft of ISO 15016 was released. In order to support the industry's smooth application of this future standard, ClassNK has released ...

DNV GL to class new methanol- fuelled tankers

The first four vessels to use DNV GL's rules for low flashpoint fuels will be a series of 50,000 dwt tankers ordered by the owners Marinvest and Westfal-Larsen. The vessels are the very first to be fuelled by methanol - a fuel that significantly reduces local air emissions. These product carriers which also are prepared for methanol will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards and are scheduled for delivery in 2016. Methanol is a low flashpoint liquid (LFL) fuel that is gaining interest in the market because it does not contain sulphur and is therefore suitable for meeting the upcoming 0.1 per cent SOx Emission Control Area requirements. Methanol has a flashpoint of about 12 degrees Celsius and the new vessels will be assigned the additional notation LFL FUELLED to demonstrate their compliance with the safety requirements set out in the industry-first rules published by DNV GL in June 2013. "Some important safety measures that will be incorporated into these vessels relate to the location of tanks and piping to prevent energy impact from sources such as grounding or cargo operations, a full secondary fuel containment system, leakage detection, automatic shutdown functions and ignition prevention. The safety philosophy is similar ...
