Accidents can happen at the best of recycling facilities, LR says. But lessons are learned when procedures aren’t followed at well-organised facilities. Individuals, or companies, are held accountable for not following documented working practices and existing processes are then further improved. However, the most basic health and safety requirements are still not being followed at the majority of the world’s shipbreaking yards.

IMO announced that the Government of Bangladesh is actively seeking international partnerships and financial support to help make the country’s ship-recycling facilities greener and more sustainable, following the successful completion of the first phase of a project aimed at improving safety and environmental standards within the country’s ship-recycling industry.

Ships, drilling units and other offshore assets almost inevitably contain quantities of hazardous substances. EU Commission recently published its first edition of the EU list of approved ship recycling facilities which only features yards situated in Europe and reaches under 30% of the EU’s own recycling capacity target. For ECSA, the initial EU ship recycling list shows clear need for global mind-set.

Mr. Henning Gramann, CEO, GSR- Services has responded to GREEN4SEA questions providing his insight for the ship recycling sector. He said that the preparation of IHM is a significant challenge for 2017 and stressed the need for supporting the shipping industry in the integration of IHM and ship recycling planning in daily routine, otherwise implementation of the new legal requirements will be too 'burdensome'.

The European Commission has adopted the first version of the "European List of ship recycling facilities", taking an important first step to help ensure that ships are recycled in facilities that are safe for workers and environmentally sound.
