The video depicts the last moments of the famous cruise ship Monarch, which had once been among the first pioneering Sovereign class ships, introduced by Royal Caribbean International nearly 30 years ago.

A Bangladeshi woman whose husband lost his life while dismantling an oil tanker at a ship-breaking yard in 2018, can file a negligence claim against a British company involved in the vessel’s sale, according to London’s High Court.

With Kleven Verft filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, the Norwegian ship recycling company Green Yard, reached an agreement with the bankruptcy authorities, banks, and creditors to acquire Kleven.

Major shipping associations jointly developed guidelines on preparation of Inventory of Hazardous Materials, as required by the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. The regulation requires all EU-flagged vessels and non EU-flagged vessels calling at any EU member state to have an IHM onboard, from 31 December 2020, and no extensions on this deadline are awaited. 

The absence of one international and uniformly applicable convention for ship recycling can make this a difficult field to navigate for operators, causing even reputational and financial damage.

BIMCO reports that COVID-19 impacts the smooth implementation of the new inventory of hazardous materials requirements, which is due to December 31, 2020.

The Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) tanker J. NAT is currently being towed towards the infamous shipbreaking beach of Chattogram. The ship left Indonesian waters on 18 April even though local activists warned Indonesian authorities about the toxicity of the vessel. The NGO Shipbreaking Platform, Basel Action Network (BAN), European Environmental Bureau (EEB), IPEN, Nexus3 Foundation and Zero Mercury Working Group have now warned Bangladesh of the breach of international waste laws, and urged authorities to halt the import of the ship.
