South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), ship engines provider HSD Engine (HSD) and German MAN Energy Solutions signed a strategic agreement to cooperate in the field of marine engine systems digitization.

The maritime industry’s response to the call for tighter environmental regulations combined with the 2020 sulphur cap is steadily driving the industry towards dual fuel solutions, said marine technology company WinGD, announcing its financial results for the first quarter of 2019.

In a ceremony at Fincantieri’s shipyard “Arsenale Triestino San Marco”, in Trieste, Italy, Seattle-based Windstar Cruises, initiated construction of the first of three new ships sections, under Windstar’s $250 Million Star Plus Initiative. 

A General cargo ship "M" was involved in cargo operations in an Indonesian port. Charterers had arranged the vessel to receive bunkers by a local bunker barge. The barge moored alongside of the vessel for supplying the agreed amount of 155M/T of fuel oil (180cst) into No.1 & 2 F.O. tanks respectively.

​The US National Transportation Safety Board released its report on the diesel generator failure on board the offshore supply vessel 'Red Dawn', on December 13, 2017. Namely, as the ship was on its way to resupply the radar station Sea-Based X-Band Radar, its number 2 main diesel engine suffered a mechanical failure. This led to the ejection of components from the cylinder block, which destroyed the engine. 

During the 2019 SMART4SEA Conference, Dr. Panos Theodossopoulos, CEO, Propulsion Analytics, presented, together with WinGD, a real time Engine Diagnostic System (EDS) available in all WinGD 2-stroke, diesel and dual fuel engines.

The Swedish Club provides lessons learned from a machinery failure. Namely, the main engine, a six cylinder medium speed type, had serious damage and had to be renewed. Moreover, the turbo charger had to be overhauled. The engine had been operated on a high thermal load for a long time and the turbocharger efficiency had been affected by fouling.

Japanese shipping company “K” Line announced that one of its new 91,000-DWT-type coal carriers, 'Corona Youthful', was delivered with a binary cycle power generation system developed by Kobe Steel, Ltd. at Oshima Shipbuilding, on 1 February 2019. 

Mr. Antonis Trakakis, Chief Technology Officer at Forward Ships, talks about methane slips from LNG fueled engines. Mr. Trakakis notes that these emissions are not inherent to the natural gas. The problem lies at the applied heat cycle, making the amount of methane slip depend on the technology of each engine.

Already established measures have paved the way for a more environmental-friendly shipping. A key example is the IMO NOx Tier III limits. These limits apply to engines installed on or after 1 January 2016, that are operating in Emission Control Areas and establish a strict limit on their emissions.
