A new Japanese organization named 'Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships' aims the commercialization of next-generation greener ships, by developing advanced environmental performance-enhancing technologies in ship design that will respond to tightening of environmental regulations over the long term.

With the IMO 2020 regulations already up and running, as well as the promise of further mandates down the line, are pushing ship designs forward, Wartsila believes.

After obtaining the European Commission's approval, Kongsberg Maritime, with parent company Kongsberg Gruppen has completed the acquisition of Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine (RRCM), on April 1. Officially now part of Kongsberg Maritime, RRCM will operate under the Kongsberg brand and the Kongsberg Maritime legal entity.

An evaluation by international tanker owner Stena Bulk revealed that the IMOIIMAX type of its 13 chemical vessels has been a success, both in terms of performance and business. An IMOIIMAX tanker has 18 separate tanks and is also characterised by high safety and low fuel consumption.

Celebrity Edge, the first ship to be completely designed in 3D has already started its Translantic voyage this month. The vessel marks a turning point on ship design, as from the first sketches, every step was done in 3D. Celebrity Cruise officially took delivery of Celebrity Edge from the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France in November 2018. 

The Project Forward initiative led by Athens-Based Arista Shipping, with Finnish Wärtsilä as one of the participants, demonstrates that with LNG as fuel, an advanced hull design, and highly efficient propulsion machinery, it will be possible to meet the IMO’s target for a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.

Rolls-Royce signed an agreement to sell its Commercial Marine business, to Kongsberg, for £500m and net proceeds of around £350m to £400m. The sale includes propulsion, deck machinery, automation and control, a service network spanning more than 30 countries and ship design capability. Rolls-Royce’s Ship Intelligence activities, including remote and autonomous operation of commercial vessels, are also included.

Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding cooperated with DNV GL, on a joint development project for a new 65,000dwt open-hatch general cargo carrier concept. The 210m ship will have a 77,000m3 and 65,000 tonnes deadweight capacity, with a 13.1m draught due to its wider breadth. Composite uses similar raw materials to those found in the hatch covers of the ECO-Ship 2020.

Finnlines, in the context of its Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Programme, decided to lengthen four vessels in 2017, with an option of additional two. Finnlines now decided to exercise the option to lengthen two more vessels.

Maritime software, services and data analysis provider NAPA, announced that DSME chose the 3D model-based NAPA Steel software to streamline design processes and be up to date with the 21st century naval architects and structure designers. DSME will use the software at both the initial design stages, and detailed design stages.
