The UK MCA announced that eight foreign-flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during August 2018, after failing PSC inspection. From these, there were five new detentions of foreign flagged vessels in a UK port, while three vessels remained under detention from previous months.

The US Cruise Ship National Center of Expertise cited a list of common causes of PSC detentions on cruise ships by the USCG throughout 2017. USCG conducted 292 cruise ship examinations in 2017 and only 0.34% received a detention, which shows there is a strong safety culture in the cruise line industry.

Following release of its PSC annual report last week, Paris MoU issued an infographic summarizing the key figures from its PSC inspections throughout 2017. The report revealed a slight increase in the number of inspections and a slight decrease in the detention percentage for 2017; 3.82% compared to 3.84% in 2016.

Following release of its PSC annual report in June, ClassNK underlined a frequency in deficiencies related to defects with quick closing valves for fuel oil tanks. In most cases, quick closing valves were inoperative due to seizing of the quick closing valves, air leakage and others caused by a failure in proper onboard maintenance.

Paris MoU issued its annual report on Port State Control, revealing a slight increase in the number of inspections and a slight decrease in the detention percentage for 2017; 3.82% compared to 3.84% in 2016. However, the report shows a significant increase in the numbers of refusal of access in 2017; 33 compared to 20 in 2016.

ClassNK issued its PSC annual report, revealing 426 reported PSC detentions relating to 383 ships from January to December 2017. The number of ships detained represents about 4.5 % of the total number of ships in the NK fleet. Detention ratio of the NK fleet in 2017 is about 5.0%.

The Black Sea MoU issued its 2017 PSC Annual report, reporting a total of 283 detentions warranted to ships found with serious deficiencies. This represents a detention percentage of 5.54% which is 23.58% increase as compared with 229 detentions in 2016. A total of 5,112 inspections were conducted in 2017.

In its Port State Control Annual Report for 2017, the USCG revealed that detention regarding Flag Administrations from 2015 to 2017 have decreased  slightly, as they have gown to 1.40%, from 1.59%. This indicates a better performance from Flag Administrations. Flags with only one detention in the past three years are removed from the targeted flag list.

In its monthly update on ship detentions for April, the UK MCA announced that six foreign-flagged ships were under detention in UK ports during April 2018, after failing PSC inspection. There were two new detentions, while four vessels remained under detention from previous months. Three vessels remained under detention at the end of April.

The Bahamas maritime Authority issued a guidance on the management of Port State Control inspections, to ensure that companies operating Bahamian ships comply with international Convention requirements and national regulations of the PSC process, and to maintain the position of Bahamian flag in the white performance list.
