New expedition to further explore Indian ocean depths

Scientists will carry out a years-long mission to further explore the Indian Ocean. The scientists aim to document changes that are happening underneath the sea level, and that are able to impact billions of people in the region during the coming decades. The so-called ‘Nekton Mission’ will carry out dives in other parts of the Indian Ocean over the course of three years.

Seychelles paves the way for largest marine protection area in Indian Ocean

In February 2018, the Government of Seychelles announced the creation of two new areas for marine protection covering 16% (210,000 square km) of its ocean. These new marine protections are the first milestone in creating a Seychelles Marine Spatial Plan that will cover the second-largest area of ocean in the world.
