The ‘One Planet Shipping’ report, published by Seas At Risk, reveals that drastic changes to the whole shipping ecosystem are a must if the IMO is to hit its decarbonisation goals.  

Seas At Risk urges the EU to lead the way in decarbonisation efforts as the IMO negotiates to reduce shipping’s environmental impact. By leveraging the collective strength of its Member States, the EU can set a powerful example, showing the need for unified action to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Five environmental NGOs have issued an open letter to the European Commission, to include the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) in the EU Port State Control Directive. 

NGOs Pacific Environment and Seas at Risk demand the top 10 container giants to invest a minimum of $95 billion of this year’s mega-profits in kick-starting their own upgrade to zero-emission propulsion.

During an EU Ocean Week event, six NGOs published their assessment of the EU’s progress to secure a healthy ocean by 2030, which is the goal set by the Blue Manifesto. The analysis reveals that the EU made little progress in the last year to achieve the necessary targets outlined in the Blue Manifesto.

Commenting on the decarbonization progress of shipping, Seas at Risk says an increase in shipping emissions in 2021 shows there is a need for ‘urgent short-term regulation’.

Following the commitments that came out of COP26, Seas at Risk calls IMO to ‘urgently align’ the agency’s work on reducing climate impacts from shipping.

The European Parliament's Environment Committee has voted to strengthen the European Commission’s Plastics Strategy, which aims to reduce plastic pollution. Under the Strategy, the Commission proposed new EU-wide rules in May targeting 10 single-use plastic products.

In a report presented to the European Parliament and Council in late July, the European Commission found that the goal of biologically diverse, clean and healthy seas by 2020 is unlikely to be achieved through the measures put in place by Member States under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

European ports believe that any proposals leading to better enforcement of the obligation for ships to deliver waste at shore are welcome. The compliance of specific elements of the Directive with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships gains ESPO’s support.
