Peter Lundahl Rasmussen, Head of Maritime Information, BIMCO provides a brief recap of the important developments occurred in shipping during 2016 and shares his insight into the major safety concerns that industry has to pay attention in 2017.

Kostas G. Gkonis, Secretary General, Intercargo, says the 2016 topics and concerns continue in 2017, therefore, liquefaction remains a major problem for dry bulk shipping as well. Dr. Gkonis said that the Association is looking into future amendments to the IMSBC Code and plans to develop a new guide for masters on cargoes that may liquefy to increase awareness on that important topic.

Colin Gillespie, Deputy Director Loss Prevention, North of England P&I Club, addresses key challenges that the shipping industry needs to take into consideration and put forward action plans in 2017.Mr. Gillespie explains how 2016 impacted bulk cargoes, human element, cyber security and fishing safety and shares his aspirations for the new year.

William H. Moore, Senior Vice President, American P&I Club, responded to SAFETY4SEA questions by providing insight into the current and future safety concerns. Dr. Moore reveals Club's focus areas for 2017 and poses key questions to industry stakeholders to raise awareness into the significant global financial and commercial challenges that shipping industry faces.

Mark Bull FNI, Maritime Consultant, Trafalgar Navigation Limited has shared his forecast for shipping safety in 2017 urging industry stakeholders to take the Human Element into account more seriously, therefore, a strict Code of Conduct is needed.

Philip Tinsley, Maritime Security Manager, BIMCO, revealed to SAFETY4SEA plans for 2017 with the aim to enhance maritime security. Mr Tinsley said that BIMCO will continue to develop cyber security awareness throughout the industry by updating its cyber-related guidelines. Also, the release of a Global Best Management Practice document has been scheduled in 2017 as a complimentary on BMP4.

Kirsi Tikka, Executive VP, ABS responded to SAFETY4SEA questions providing an overall forecast for the smart shipping developments in 2017. Dr. Tikka noted that the idea of ‘smart shipping’ represents a positive shift which includes many challenges and highlighted that remote monitoring, remote maintenance and autonomous operations are the three evolutionary stages that will drive changes to ship design and construction.

Frank Coles, CEO, Transas gave a brief picture of the maritime landscape highlighting how important a real change is for the industry. However, he noted, it is time to show industry the way. Old business practices and reluctance to change will be among the biggest smart shipping challenges for the 2017; industry needs to figure out the way to solve these issues.

Giampiero Soncini, Director Marine Division, Volaris responded to SAFETY4SEA questions regarding the smart developments in the shipping industry during 2016 and his aspirations for 2017. Mr Soncini acknowledges 2017 as a 'waiting year'; although there are many smart ideas, investments may still be a bit scarce, he explained.

Peter Mantel, Managing Director, BMT Smart, highlights the benefits of Fleet Performance Management and calls for the shipping companies to take a Managed Service approach as many benefits are being involved. In 2017, Mr. Mantel anticipates the industry to modernise further by using the many available data-driven technologies that have changed radically the maritime landscape.
