The industry now needs not only to communicate, but to engage with an effective strategy towards sustainable shipping.

What has been the impact of COVID-19 as a digital accelerator, and what are the options that are becoming the new normal in the market? These are some of the questions answered in the latest SMART4SEA talk, which explored the key smart challenges in the industry, as well changes to maritime operations, along with increased digitalization.

During the 2020 SAFETY4SEA Virtual Forum, the last panel focused on the challenges surrounding marine insurance claims such as the rise of damaged cargo and the increase of containerships fires, while discussed about how the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the risk environment around the high value and temperature-sensitive goods and how shipping industry is affected in several ways.

As a result of the rapid rise of digitalization and with automation gaining momentum within shipping, job requirements change. Regarding the maritime employment, during the second virtual CAREER4SEA Talk, speakers focused on the new skills required for young professionals aiming to join the industry.

During last SAFETY4SEA’s Virtual Forum, the attendees gave their insights on cyber security and its part in the shipping industry, highlighting that shipping has still a lot way to go, in regards to how it treats cyber risks. Also, in what is an industry first, the experts applauded IMO’s Resolution, effective from January 1st 2020, and explained why, to some extent, the COVID-19 crisis has a positive impact on the digital evolution.

Safety remains a top priority for shipping, especially in these challenging times of mental tiredness which make the need for safety conscience bigger than ever. In this respect, a bigger focus on seafarers’ human aspect and mental wellbeing is the one thing that could have the most profound impact on the industry’s safety culture, shipping experts agreed during a recent SAFETY4SEA Talk.

One of the key challenges for greater gender diversity in shipping is all about perception, says Mrs Alison Taylor, Europe Crew Training Manager at Svitzer, in an exclusive interview to SAETY4SEA. Mrs Taylor explains how her organization supports diversity and inclusion which are currently key areas of development for the whole maritime industry and equally for the towage sector, which has started to look closer at diversity and how it can positively impact the lives of female seafarers both onboard and ashore.

Indications are that the transition to 2020 sulphur cap has been ‘’extremely smooth, a testament to the preparations of all stakeholders prior to the new rules entering into force", IMO said on the occasion of one year of implementation of the IMO Sulphur Cap requirement

The SMART4SEA Virtual Forum successfully concluded on February 24th focusing on the implication of the pandemic in the short and long term and holding discussions on how the industry should work in creating a smarter future for shipping.

It is known that the Gulf of Guinea remains a hotspot for piracy incidents, as the latest IMB Piracy Annual Report revealed. To remind, 35 crew were kidnapped from their vessels in 2020, with the GoG accounting for over than 95% of crew kidnap numbers. Amid this crew kidnapping crisis that shipping industry is dealing with, speakers at the 2021 SAFETY4SEA Talk on security, discussed about key anti-piracy measures and the security challenges for the operators.
