SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that MarineFields Holding Ltd has received the 2020 SMART4SEA e-Navigation Award, sponsored by Latsco Marine Management Inc., at a prestigious award ceremony which successfully concluded on January the 28th at Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the 2020 SMART4SEA Forum.
During his presentation at 2019 SAFETY4SEA Hamburg Forum, Capt. Mark Bull, Director, Trafalgar Navigation, gave an insight concerning e-navigation, pointing out that we are on the threshold of a major change in our industry; it has already started and it is now picking up speed.
Mr. Tor Svanes, CEO, NAVTOR, notes that passage planning is a huge administrative burden for operators and further talks about key issues to consider when providing e-navigation solutions for vessels. In addition, he mentions that although technology offers benefits for shipping and automation is approaching, human element should always be at the center of attention.
SAFETY4SEA ran a quick poll to sense what people from the maritime world believe regarding autonomous ships and the importance of the presence of crew onboard. Interestingly, only 10% find the presence of crew onboard vessels inessential, and just 6% find it optional.
During his presentation at the SAFETY4SEA Cyprus conference, Sotiris Kambanellas, President, YoungShip Cyprus presented key issues with regards to crewing in the 21st century, considering how new technologies are impacting the global shipping industry. In a constantly evolving world, even a more “traditional” industry like shipping is already changing.
