During his presentation at the inaugural SAFETY4SEA Conference in London, Jad Mouawad, CEO, Mouawad Consulting, referred to BWMC Implementation Challenges with respect to retrofit, supervision, installation, training and commissioning/re-commissioning of a BWMS.
During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Mr. Konstantinos Dimopoulos, International Sales Manager, ERMA FIRST, shared his experience on BWTS selection procedure, advising how a vessel operator will select the most favorable system according to the vessel type. Mr. Dimopoulos noted that operations with problems in 2017 were up to approximately 30% while it almost doubled last year.
Mr. Mark Riggio, President, BEMA, refers to the objectives of this new association; as a key priority, the Ballastwater Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (BEMA) aims to harmonize differences between manufacturers and ship owners and provide a unified voice and technical support to facilitate compliance.
Mr. Leif Erik Caspersen, Director International Sales, ERMA FIRST, provides recommendations on how to select a suitable BWTS retrofitting. A ballast water treatment, he said, is much complicated as it is especially designed for each vessel. Mr. Caspersen advised that operators should select the systems with the most suitable operation options for their vessels.
Mr. Stamatis Fradelos, Director, Business Development, ABS, highlighted key technical safety issues related to the installation of BWTS. His presentation provided an overview of the BWT Technologies and corresponding physical separation and different disinfection solutions currently available in the market.
Mr. Mark Hadfield, CEO, Flow Water Technologies, addressed the subject of ballast water treatment which is one of those subjects that whenever it is brought up, ship operators tend to avoid, he commented. This is due to the enormous space required for the installation of a BWMS and the many regulations concerning its application.
