NOAA launched an infographic providing tips and information on safe boating, given that many are the accidents taking place at sea. Safety, despite the measures taken, also comes when one is informed about the weather, according to the National Weather System. Weather can cause many accidents, keeping in mind that many have been the casualties when weather conditions have resulted to injuries and fatalities.

EPIRB or Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon is a safety device carried by a vessel to alert search and rescue services, allowing them to quickly locate you in the event of an emergency. When activated it transmits a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency which is monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.

Wärtsilä’s 10 rules to ensure safety

Wärtsilä conducted its fifth annual global Safety Day on March 14th, 2019. This year theme was Lifesavers, referring to Wärtsilä’s 10 life-saving rules. This Safety day aimed to enhance life-saving rules and called people to act when they see a case that is inconsistent with the ten rules. EMSA: 20% of investigated accidents on Ro-Ros are fire related

According to EMSA data, the last seven years, 3,236 Ro-Ro accidents were reported out of which 25% are fire related, 19% collisions and 16% are attributed to loss of control. Assessing risks before starting an operation is a critical step, EMSA notes, highlighting lessons learned from Ro-Ro analysis.
