Canada’s Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, announced that more than $2.5 million has been awarded to four coastal communities in British Columbia to develop, test and evaluate a new maritime awareness information system in Canada.

EMSA in collaboration with the European Commission created an infographic presenting the benefits of electronic tags for marine safety. Namely, eTags give direct access to product details; seamless data flow between manufacturers, notified bodies and authorities; read RFID and data matrix formats among others.

New electronic tracking system to improve safety for tourists

A new electronic tracking system is being tested, which will use tourists’ handprints in order to identify and monitor them. The new system is being trialled on the Great Barrier Reef, aiming to reduce the risk of divers and snorkellers that are left behind. The system uses a palm vein scanning technology and facial recognition.
