The results of a DNV GL's recent survey on maritime safety in four regions reflected the industry’s focus on safety and presented direction on how to improve safety at sea. The main conclusion is that the crew is the key and that to improve safety at sea the community needs to invest in training and enhancing the safety culture. 

The US Coast Guard Navigation Center informed that 20 ships were reported suffering a GPS disruption, in the Black Sea, since 22 June 2017. In view of this, it urges operators to exercise caution and reminds them how to report a disruption and the actions they should take to mitigate the effects of a disruption.

As the Port State Control’s concentrated inspection campaigns on Safety of Navigation and Life Saving Appliances will start on 1 September 2017, DNV GL summarizes considerations on how to prepare for the upcoming inspections.

A safe steering for the remote-monitored and controlled autonomous ships of the future is currently under development. The new technology has been developed for navigation systems and ship autopilots, which steer ships automatically.

Aiming to implement smart solutions for a safe and sustainable shipping, the EU-funded EfficienSea2 project has finished a full-scale simulation of a variety of e-Navigation solutions. The simulations involved 8 navigators and took four days, at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, focusing on the human factors in e-Navigation.

The European Maritime Simulator Network will be used to validate the STM concepts and services, running the largest civil simulation test ever, with 29 manned bridges in 10 centres. The purpose is to reflect the STM concept, to validate and evaluate the findings and to give input to various hypotheses and the Formal Safety Assessment developed by other activities within the project.

The US Coast Guard said that the five differential global positioning system (DGPS) sites operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are being decommissioned. However, the forty DGPS sites remotely monitored by the Coast Guard remain in operation.
