NOAA makes changes in channel depths on raster nautical chart products

NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey announced its plans to change the US Army Corps of Engineers maintained channel depth values on raster nautical chart products, which include paper nautical charts and the corresponding digital raster navigational chart. The change from showing, often outdated, controlling depths, to showing channel project depths on raster nautical chart products, will provide more clarity and safety for mariners.

IMO makes progress towards standardisation of electronic navigation

BIMCO informed that a sub-committee under the IMO has forwarded three documents for adoption in June. This development made one step closer to the adoption of a standardised system for electronic navigation. This year’s Navigation, Communication, Search and Rescue sub-committee (NCSR 6) took place from 15-25 January in London.

NYK creates digital guidance for ECDIS operation

NYK Shipmanagement, an NYK Group company, created the ‘iPlus ECDIS’. This is a digital guidance for the operation of ECDIS. The program aims to assist operators use better the ECDIS over a shorter time by providing guidance regarding 66 ECDIS operations. The platform’s structure is based on the ECDIS checklist provided by the Nautical Institute.

MOL uses algorithm to improve collision avoidance

USCG: LRIT system must be reported every six hours

NAVCEN, in collaboration with the Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance, developed a program to identify vessels that have not reported their Long Range Identification and Tracking status and are not in compliance with 33 CFR §169.230. Once notified, the USCG will enforce the LRIT reporting requirement.

New maritime data to update nautical charts of Demerara River

The UK Hydrographic Office handed over marine geospatial data to the Guyanese Government after a campaign of hydrographic surveying. The data, which was collected for four months between 2016 and 2017, will initially be used to update nautical charts of the Demerara River.
