The sinking of the ferry vessel MS Estonia in the Baltic Sea marks the second-deadliest peacetime sinking of a European ship, after the Titanic, as well as the deadliest peacetime shipwreck to have taken place in European waters. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 989 people, of whom 852 lost their lives. When the MS Estonia sank it shook the shipping industry, due to its unprecedented extent in the number of victims, and the damage it was caused.

The new high efficiency RoRo vessel from Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s HERO class, has made its maiden call at the Port of Southampton. The HERO class (High Efficiency RoRo) has two new-build ships in its fleet and the latest, MV Traviata, has called at the Port of Southampton for the first time.
The Turkish logistics company Ekol Logistics and the Belgian groupage firm Transuniverse Forwarding informed that they are together building a 40 hectare multimodal site at Kluizendok in Ghent, part of North Sea Port. There will be 10 hectares for a cross-docking platform, 20 hectares for a rail terminal and 10 hectares for a ro-ro terminal.
The Estonian terminal operator HHLA TK Estonia is trying to strengthen its position as a RoRo hub in the Baltic region. Namely, Finnish ferry company Eckerö Line recently started connecting the port of Muuga, where HHLA TK Estonia operates a multi-function terminal, with Vuosaari in Finland.

The new RoRo MV Traviata set new benchmark in energy efficiency. The ship is the second of a series of Post-Panamax HERO vessels, and has joined Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ocean fleet. This is an energy-efficient RoRo vessel. MV Traviata has a capacity equal to 8,000 cars and electrically hoistable deck panels
The largest container vessel ever built in San Diego, Lurline, was christened and launched by General Dynamics Nassco, on Saturday, June 15. The vessel is a 870-foot-long, 3,500 TEU, 44,200 deadweight metric ton, combination container ship/roll-on, roll-off (ConRo) vessel built for Honolulu-based Matson, Inc.
The Ministry of Transport and Communication of Finland announced that the legislative reform concerning the safety of passenger ships will be completed once the related decrees are specified and clarified. Amendments will be made to the Decree on Inspecting Foreign Vessels in Finland.
Knud E. Hansen, a ship design company, designed the first generation of LNG-powered ultra-large ro-ro vessels for the newly-established Swedish company Wallenius-SOL. The 1A Super ice-classed vessels will have a length of abt. 242 m and a deadweight capacity of abt. 27,000 t making them largest in the class.
