Rolls-Royce and Bestway unveil new energy efficient ship designs

Design for low emissions and reduced operating costs Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company and China's Bestway Engineering, have unveiled a range of energy efficient ship designs which have been produced to meet the future requirements of the global merchant shipping industry. The new highly efficient ship designs have been produced using the combined expertise of both companies and will feature advanced Rolls-Royce propulsion systems. They are tailored specifically to meet the needs of merchant shipping, where low emissions and reduced operating costs are key drivers.Oddbjørn Eliassen, Rolls-Royce, President - Merchant, said: "As international emissions controls are progressively introduced, the marine industry is increasingly collaborating to create highly efficient vessels that reduce operating costs and environmental impacts. Through our partnership with Bestway, we are well positioned to lead the development of ship designs that will meet the future demands of merchant operators."Rolls-Royce and Bestway Engineering announced their collaboration a year ago, and these new designs are the first to emerge from the companies' Joint Project Team. The vessel types include Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, container vessels and general cargo ships, all designed to comply with and exceed future emission targets. Those designs featuring Rolls-Royce gas engines already meet IMO (International ...

Environship from idea to reality

This concept won the "Next Generation Ship Award" On the 18th of October, Norwegian ro-ro operator, Nor Lines, signed a contract ordering two liquefied natural gas-powered (LNG) vessels to be built by China's Tsuji Heavy Industries. The building of the two new Nor Lines vessels signifies the realization of "Environship". This concept, which was developed in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce, won the "Next Generation Ship Award" during this year's Nor-Shipping.Powered by LNGIn addition to being powered by LNG, the vessels also incorporate gas-electric propulsion systems and on-board power-generation that increase the vessel's energy efficiency. While powered on LNG, the vessels will sharply reduce the emissions of hazardous natural gasses, reducing the emissions of Nitric oxide (NOx) by 90%, CO2 by 40% and eliminating sulfur and particle emissions. The two vessels are expected to be delivered from October 2013 and will be used to load cargoes in Germany or the Netherlands, for delivery to ports along the Norwegian coastline. The order also comes with an option for two more vessels. The contract between Nor Lines and Tsuji Heavy Industries will trigger significant contributions from Norway as more than half of the contract value will be delivered by Norwegian sub-suppliers, mainly within environmental technologyPromoting ...

The down side of dual fuel, by Rolls-Royce

Dual fuel gas/diesel engines are not a good option According to Rolls-Royce Marine, dual fuel gas/diesel engines are not a good option, either engineering-wise or economically, compared with the Bergen lean-burn pure-gas solution.Speaking to an international marine press party in Ulsteinvik, Norway, Oddbjorn Eliassen, Rolls-Royce Marine president, merchant, disagreed with the views presented in favour of the dual-fuel option by most of the speakers at the recent Mercator Media Gas Fuelled Ships conference in Rotterdam.Eliassen said that the gas-only engine would always be a better engineering solution than competitors' combined dual-fuel engines, which cannot be optimised for either gas or diesel. A gas-only engine can be significantly more efficient, with the Bergen lean-burn option recording figures of 50.3% efficiency, compared with a figure of 45% to 46% for diesels, less for dual-fuel versions.Apart from the superior specific fuel consumption, the gas-only solution avoids having to provide both gas and diesel tanks and fuel systems on board, which incur extra capital cost and reduce potential cargo volume.Another problem with dual-fuel engines is the poor transient load performance, taking some 2 minutes to respond at part load in gas mode, which, according to Rolls-Royce makes them unsuitable for use in harbour, which ...

Rolls-Royce secures new equipment orders for tugs in China

Orders worth around 18 million Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, announced orders worth around 18 million for the supply of Azimuth thrusters to power 18 new tugs being built in China.Qingdao and Yingkou Ports will take delivery of 12 new tugs, four of which will be the most powerful operating in China. Tangshan and Tangshan Cao Feidian Ports, located in the He Bei province of Northern China, have also placed orders for a total of six tugs. The 18 vessels will all be equipped with two Rolls-Royce Azimuth thrusters. The thrusters comprise an electric motor and a propeller which, as a combined unit can be rotated horizontally in any direction to manoeuvre the vessel without the need for a rudder.John Zhang, Rolls-Royce, Manager - Merchant, Greater China, said: "The multiple orders received demonstrate how our cutting edge marine technology is applied to meet our customers' evolving requirements. These exceptionally powerful and highly manoeuvrable thrusters are critical to supporting the continued growth of the Chinese tug market, and the important role tugs play in facilitating trade."Such highly powered tugs are new to Chinese ports and are a growing necessity to manoeuvre the largest ships now in operation around the globe. Cal State Long Beach engineering are working with Rolls Royce to create ship pollution filter

To cut toxic diesel air pollutants by 85% from freight ship Cal State Long Beach engineering students and professors are working with Rolls Royce to develop an exhaust filter expected to cut toxic diesel air pollutants by 85 percent from freight ships calling at San Pedro Bay.With $1.8 million in grant money from the Port of Los Angeles, the pilot program seeks to create and test a device known as a seawater scrubber for large container ships and other vessels.Engineering professors Hamid Rahai and Hamid Hefazi will lead the study with four students. The group plans to travel with the container ship Horizon Hawk on trips between Los Angeles and Oakland. The scrubber is essentially a high-tech filter using saltwater to capture diesel particulate matter, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides before they leave ship smokestacks. All three emissions have been linked to smog, climate change and/or illnesses including asthma, cancer and heart disease. The filter will be installed on the Horizon Hawk, a 2,824-container ship making regular trips between California, Asia and South Pacific islands. "This could potentially allow vessels to use (high-sulfur) bunker fuels and still reduce emissions by a tremendous level, saving shipping companies millions on the more costly low- ...

Rolls-Royce found guilty of fraud against Carnival Cruise Lines

A $24 million verdict against Rolls-Royce Carnival Cruise Lines recently secured a $24 million verdict against Rolls-Royce, which was found guilty of fraud by a unanimous jury.Rolls-Royce marketed its Mermaid pod propulsion system to Carnival for operation on its largest and most prestigious ship, the Queen Mary II. The jury found that at the time Rolls-Royce presented its pod to Carnival, Rolls-Royce knew the pod was defective and not fully developed.Carnival argued that Rolls-Royce rushed into the market to beat its competitors and sold an untested product that failed throughout the cruise industry. It further contended that Rolls-Royce made money not only on the sale of the pods, but also each time that the bearings on the pods had to be replaced. It claimed that Rolls-Royce refused to pay for any of the replacement costs and made money off the repairs, forcing it to file suit. The judge and jury agreed with Carnival. US District Judge Patricia Seitz said that the jurors asked her why the case ever went to trial: "The first question they had was why didn't these people settle when they have to work together." Seitz also stated that she regarded the trial as a potential "bellweather for ...
