IMO launched a new logo for its Women in Maritime programme, as part of its mission to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The primary objective of the program is to encourage IMO Member States to open the doors of their maritime institutes to enable women to train alongside men and acquire the high-level of competence that the maritime industry demands.

Closing the Maritime 2050 strategy event, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Nusrat Ghani explains that there is the need to ensure that these career opportunities are open to everyone, irrespective of their gender or background, which is not the case nowadays. She added that only 4% of the 10,600 UK certified officers active at sea are female.

Maritime 2050 is the first long-term strategy developed in close partnership with industry that highlights the government’s recognition of the importance of the maritime sector to Britain’s future success. That importance has only increased in the context of the Brexit, with 95% of all UK trade being enabled by the sector. Maritime 2050 is published at a time when the UK faces intense competition from maritime nations in the Far East, Northern Europe, Gulf and North America.

While talking at the first SAFETY4SEA Conference in Hamburg, Mr. Mauricio Garrido, President at T&T Salvage LLC, discussed ‘ways to respond when safety fails’ from marine salvage industry perspective, noting that the constantly emerging regulations and the influx of larger and larger ships are challenging safety in the sector.

During his presentation at the last SAFETY4SEA Conference in Athens, Capt. Yves Vandenborn, Director of Loss Prevention, The Standard Club, noted that seafarer resilience can be improved through enhanced training regimes focused on realism, putting emphasis on additional experience.

A new report prepared by RNB Energy for the Natural Gas Council studied in detail the natural gas industry’s performance through three significant weather events in 2017 and 2018. The study confirmed the natural gas industry’s remarkable resilience to wide variety of severe weather.
